Hey 399,
I might have some old info from Ralph around here.
I'll look tonight.
I think i remember Nomad talking about Ralph's novel way of feeding the counter on the 858 chassis, so he probably has some info about it.

well i would say the most likely culprit is the radio itself.
it's got to be at least 30 years old at this point. it's not unheard of for a radio to start having strange issues after being "alive" this long.
do you have another radio you can try in order to eliminate the rest of your equipment...
LOL BrotherDXer! its nice that someone can relate!
Yeah CK we all have bottled water dispensers around here for cold drinking water.
The water in my area, in addition to being a nice temperature for a bath, happens to have a lot of minerals in it that make it taste terrible.
there is nothing...
people like to tell us desert dwellers "at least it's a dry heat!".
We tell them that so is opening an oven door.
I will say though that im saving money on hot water!
the pipes and the ground is so hot for so long that i haven't had to run the hot water in the shower all summer!

Hey 399!
this seems like a great thread to post a few pics of that heavily modified 139xlr!
i know myself and at least a few others here would get a real kick out of seeing the radio that belongs to the king of 858 mods!

my thought would be that there is some ripple current that is causing the cap to heat up, but you said you tried it on an external DC supply right?
if so, that would take my idea out of consideration for the most part.
you could just say F it and replace the circuit with a 7808, but of course...
Ah how I love a good conspiracy theory post!
I love to read about conspiracy theories, and i liken it to taking psychology in college.
There is a well known phenomenon that happens to a great number of psychology students once they get to a certain point in their learning.
At this point they...
dss56,
you should also replace those three electrolytic caps.
if they are on their way out (they have a lifespan) then they can take out other parts that are hard to find.
replace the caps and that counter will last a long time.
LC
Well AE575 at least we'll all know it's you if we contact you in DX land!
JK!
seriously though i do hope you recover quickly. bells palsy can last for months in some people.

How about calling it the 457 and doing away with the FM and PA functions?
then the mode switch could be AM USB and LSB.
turn the PA jack into an amp keying jack.
would sell like hot cakes.

Thanks for that 711!
I might have that thread saved somewhere but i'll never find it.
I was a bit surprised by Nomad's response to Ronnie's post because i remember him being in the original thread.
Did anyone ever try this with a radio that also had an RFX unit on the back?
that could be...
Ronnie i've never actually built it.
I just happened to be part of the discussion back when That one guy brought it to the group without part values.
looks like i may have gotten the pot value wrong, as you say the one you built did indeed work well.
did you find you had to add that 470uF cap...
