Add FM Mode to Cobra 29 LTD / Uniden PC-76 / Cobra 25 LTD

Here is the cheat sheet for Cobra 25 LTD. Beware, I did not verify the two voltage rails: (J2) TX only 8+ Volts (J5) RX Only 8+ Volts So double check those as you go along if you're using the image as a "how to". I hope this is coherent enough for anyone who may need help installing one of...

Add FM Mode to Cobra 29 LTD / Uniden PC-76 / Cobra 25 LTD

Hello all, I've made an image with install details for Cobra 29 LTD or Uniden PC-76 radios. it's for the Spectrum Communications FM 455 Mod/De-Mod PCB kit that is used to add F.M. Mode to your A.M. only radio (for Export or HAM use only) I didn't show in the schematic the 8+ Volts sources...

Is buying broken things a sickness

Yeah it's a sickness, one that gets progressively worse.. Towards the end stages you'll be up to your neck in broken equipment with no room left to walk around or even think about repairing things.. But you'll keep buying stuff you don't need because It's a sickness.

    black cat jb-150

I don't know what the upper limit of the carrier power ("D.K.") is, probably 3 or 4 Watts? I do know these style of amplifiers don't like a very low dead key (less than 1 watt input) or a radio with wild modulation (see: "clipped" & "swing kit"), these amplifiers produce "swing" on their own...

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

I'd have to agree, Scott-chee diodes anyone?

They said it couldn't be done; or did they say "shouldn't"?

Here is the set with a function generator, the next test will be with an Alesis 3630.

They said it couldn't be done; or did they say "shouldn't"?

It is the audio being held low, he wasn't using any procecsing just VLC player line level out to the outboard audio amp. He is going to make a new video using compressor / limiter and the negative peaks will go beyond 90%. :)

They said it couldn't be done; or did they say "shouldn't"?

I think he was a little close to the SDR, and I agree a bit more carrier; the negative peaks should clean up and get close to 100%. At some times the EMin is a little fat but I don't really see "squaring".

They said it couldn't be done; or did they say "shouldn't"?

FQP13N10 as the Driver.. FQP13N10 as the Final.. A.M. regulator modification, "wideband capable". VLC player from the P.C. to an outboard audio amplifier. This Cobra 29 LTD belongs to a friend of mine on the west coast. The Bird 43 has a 50 Watts Element, no PEP kit, and yeah it's swangin'. I...

    Drive to Amplifier

The audio amp in the radio can only do so much without creating excessive THD %, the radio itself will struggle to produce anything near 100% modulation with sinusoidal output at such high carrier power. Watch the 'scope while sampling only the radio and play with the carrier level.

    Drive to Amplifier

They can be turned up to produce a 7 Watts carrier, I wouldn't expect the radio to be able to reach 100% modulation from there. :)

    Oscilloscope help please

Looks like it might be a problem with the scope, you should be able to get a "straight line" trace, I'd check sweep time delay and trigger settings.

    Palomar ERF-2030+

Believe me I figured it out with free information from an actual Tech. (shout-out to the fellow wwdx member who helped me!) I have an (Edit: HG) MRF-477 in my Uniden Grant XL. I should do a write-up explaining the process.;) In my application (Mostly AM only mobiles) the FQP13N10 are...

    Palomar ERF-2030+

I second this, the FQP3N10 is stronger. The specs are better all around for what I need them for, and it isn't some voodoo-hoodoo rebranded mystery part. The new NXP parts seem promising!
