Finished a little while ago adding 2 additional ground planes. 1 to the south and the other is directly connected to the ridge cap 108" in. The cap is screwed to each panel on each side of the roof which runs 40 feet long and a total span of 24' from soffit to soffit. Came in and turned the...
I thought about placing the antenna to the middle of the roof on a tripod and using the roof as a groundplane. I would need a longer run for the feed, prob' about 50'. The issue I read about with the metal roof is that the individual panels may not actually be connected so I was wondering if I...
Whoo Hoo, connected with 341 Sarasota FL this morning. Bumped the modulation (ssb) up a bit in the radio just below 100%. Going to add 2 more ground planes to the antenna once the snow comes off the roof. Metal roof and dangerous to be walking around up there with water or snow. Been studying a...
Just connected with Stuttgart Germany. pretty friggin' cool. Was very brief as it's going in and out but he heard me. Getting slammed from radio europe and germany again this a.m. FL is the usual carnage. Clear as a bell. Just can't get out to them. It's snowing here so can't get out with the...
Wow, what an invaluable tool. Thanks for this. Great to use with a Moxon or other directional ant'. Worked like a charm. I noticed from my location, to skip to FL I would have to be pointed around 205 degrees. Farther west than I thought. Pretty cool stuff.
That's the plan. I figure I'll grab a coffee and go check out some high points around my area where I have a view of the horizon. I will be able to get a view easily running north to south but the east to west will be difficult. One or the other. Taconic Range and Appalachians dominate this...
Well said! That is exactly why I stated that in the first place. It was my understanding based upon everything I've read that where I live would be a serious problem getting out. I wanted to be sure though before I did anything rash and you confirmed everything I've been learning about skip...

Last paragraph; I'm getting that impression as well. 12 watts looks to be a royal crap shoot! I know it can be done but I highly doubt it's the norm. I was listening to skip coming in from Germany, UK and the Netherlands this morning and it sounded like they were right next door. Incredible!
Good for you man! Congrats! I talked to a trucker today. I saw him drive by about 200 yards away and hailed him down. At least I know the radio is transmitting! Still  ing.
I was originally from the northwest part of CT. Ludlow is about 1/2 hour northeast of me.
You're probably better off not talking to VT. LOL Straaange place! <can not stand it>
I'll listen for ya!

You confirm my gut feeling about the 1/4 wave setup. From what I've read, I think it is transmitting more on a figure 8 sort of pattern right now because of the 2 missing wires.
I'm gonna look into the dipole you suggested. I've read a bit about those and they are cheap enough to try. Thanks!
Too funny! I guess as long as it's setup properly it probably doesn't matter what you've got. Kinda like the old adage; "It's not the car, it's the driver".
I heard a guy the other day talking to someone in RI. Couldn't hear the RI contact though. You're probably what, 250 miles from me here...
The antenna I am using has only 2/108" ground planes on the east and west sides of the antenna. Should I add 2 more that run north and south? I would have to find a way to support the south one as the antenna is on the south peak of the house. Thoughts? It's cheap and it wouldn't hurt to try it...
