    Midland 13-880B channel mod?

Anyone mod a 13-880B for channels that would include channel 38? I haven't found anything in searching but may have missed it. I am certain it would require an added crystal to be switched for a different set of channels but that is about all I know about it. Nice old radio but not too useful...

    Courier 23 Question

That's going back a few years! That was before channel 9 was for emergency only communications. I am not sure when that started. Sometime in the mid 70s I guess. I wonder why they picked 9 thru 14 and then also channel 23?

    Ameritron AL-80B amplifier ?

I have an Al-80B and use the Ameritron ATR-30 manual tuner with it. I use it mostly for a balanced wire antenna for 40 and 80 meters. Really there are several good manual tuners that work well at the power level of an Al-80B

US WWDXers: Will you be getting a FM rig?

I bought one a couple years ago and have had no problems with it. I put it in my truck. It did come with a warranty. It was in a very basic box, not the fancy box they usually come in. it certainly looked like it was brand new, no scratches or marks on it etc. It does need the squelch mod from...

    AT-6666 MOBILE

How about just using a small auto tuner? I'd use a longer antenna cut for a low SWR on CB and then use an auto tuner when on 10 or 12 meters if needed. Or maybe adjust the antenna for the band you are most likely to be on the most and use the tuner for the other. Now that I think of it, I...

    Motorola HT200

If it seems to work ok on receive I wouldn't worry much about having it gone over for function which is just checking the alignment of the receiver, I wouldn't think disabling the PTT would be very hard but you could just take out the transmit crystal if it appears easier to do assuming you just...

Moving from PAC NW to WY

WY is a sparsely populated state with few ham radio operators. You will be in a somewhat rare state. Where are you going to be located in WY, or do you know yet?

There's a few videos of Duga 3 on YouTube as well. Pretty interesting. Sure was a HUGE installation!!

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

You do have to beware of the marketing hype that the manufacturers use. They are happy to call their rigs contest rigs in the advertising. It really means little. it's like Kenwood's ads for "The Event Horizon of DX". Gimme a break! Use the rig you already have and get in a contest and...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

As far as QRM goes, My early DXing experience was learning to live with the Russian Woodpecker, Duga 3. For a number of years it was completely wiping out my receiver at random intervals most of the morning and somewhat less as the day progressed on 20 meters. Being on the west coast (Seattle)...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

Well then if you are not going to work some of the stations in contests because of that then I would not contest other than just for casual DX contacts. You'd have a hard time competing seriously if you won't work some people here and there. Contesting and even DXing can be a dog eat dog world...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

Mostly depends on how you want to operate in a contest, like what category you want to enter. A lot of the big boy contesters use Flex radios. Antennas are always more important than the radio. In some situations a rig with two receivers can be a plus. A rig with good filters that won't get...

Looking for some info on my vintage radios

Back in the day that those two rigs were commonly used, The Turner line of mics were extremely popular. The Turner Plus 2 was very popular for a base mic and the Turner M+2/U was popular for mobile rigs. The Turner Plus 3 mobile mic was also popular after the M+2. If you are not so interested in...

    Ice storms vs Quad

I have a 5 band Lightning Bolt quad. It has fiberglass spreaders and they have never been a problem in about 15 years and a few snowstorms along the way.

    Switching radios, 1 antenna

Yes it can but you want a decent coax switch to do it. There must be adequate isolation between the switching positions. Myself, I only use Alpha Delta switches for that.

    Tax on Out-Of-State Purchases

Ebay has been collecting sales taxes for some time now too if it was not mentioned. It's a drag but we had it pretty good for quite a while. Easy guess that it would only be a matter of time before sales taxes would be collected with online purchases. The government doesn't like losing that...

    NRD

Nice find! They were a popular radio back in the day. As I recall they had a 6EU7 in them for the audio which is hard to come by or expensive when you do these days.
