I talk to a couple of guys in broadcast and they will tell you more audio on the carrier is good for amateur work. 125% positive peaks is a good number.
The guys that work AM with a factory Johnson transmitter (or similar) with a d104 sound great when they are s9+20. When band conditions are...
No. But I learned that you get what you put in. Spend the time to build what you want or pay up. Buyers remorse is no fun.
I get the feeling I've upset you with my recent comments. That was not my intention. I thought you might be more open to input after the experience you had with the dx 500.
How about ground mounted radials? I scapled the grass and put down radials with biodegradable landscape spikes. The grass grew over them and I can't see them anymore.
Then choke the hell out of the coax to keep rf out of the shack.
It just seems like people on the ham forums are always replacing them. Four 811s only have 240 watts of plate dissipation. At 65 watts per tube they aren't much better than a sweep tube like the 6lf6 with 40 watts. Sweep tubes are fine if not abused or a dozen are put in parallel.
For what it costs to buy new parts and build a 3-500 cb amp you might as well pick up a used ameritron. I don't like the 811s and 572b units. They overrate them as bad as cb amp manufacturers.
I understand what you're saying though. I run more than 100% modulation so the bird does swing. It's 1950s transmitter that makes real AM.
The original swing kit was published in QTH magazine. I believe it was October 1956. It allowed more audio to be put on the carrier without the negative...
If you use an average reading watt meter like a Bird 43 and the carrier is modulated 100% positive and negative with a single tone the meter will not swing. When you talk into the microphone it will have some wiggle but no crazy swing
This may not fit your needs but has more gain and no radials. It looks to be a clone of the vector 4000 / sigma 4. It says out of stock but I'll bet they are made to order.

It will still work without the isolation transformer. As long as there aren't different dc potentials between the pc and rig nothing bad will happen. For me it's just cheap insurance.
Thats all I use the board I posted for. It isolates the audio to and from the rig for digi modes.
Did you use an isolation transformer on your 3.5mm cable? These are cheap way to connect audio from your pc to rig via the data port. Good for various modes.

I've recommended theses on qrz to new ft8 users. Most can't can't make them work and buy something...
Repeaters seem to attract the people who think ham radio is all about walkie talkies and talking like a robot.
A lot of them here upgraded from CB and try so hard to hide it that they can't have a real conversation with anyone.
