So here's some bitter irony for you---this morning I glanced up at said GM antenna to see that it has snapped over at the first junction betweeen sections. Ouch.

A good product for a fair price. They can even be turned with a cheap TV rotor. Not sure on the gamma power handling, but it is surely in the thousands.
Lots of "it depends" factors here.
A tower is definitely the best way to go, but I've seen many of these smaller beams on tripods or chimney mounts and they can work.
If the beam is going to be horizontal, that makes it more feasible. Vertical will need to make sure you don't go too high...
