No, it really is that simple to build a cheap, effective antenna. Just get it as high as you can (Don't stop at 36 feet, lol) and you will talk all over the place.

    Imax 2000 or maco v-5/8th

I worked Hawaii and South Africa with a homebrew 1/4 wave groundplane made of scrap wire and an 8 foot 2 by 2. I haven't worked Hawaii or South Africa with my Imax-2000. This does not prove that my homebrew is a "better" antenna than the Imax. In fact, I am certain that the Imax has higher...

Probably wouldn't be much difference in performance between the Little Wil and that Cobra 1500 Magmount at Dick's. They will both work for rather short distances, but nowhere near what a decent antenna like a Wilson 1000 or K40 would. That's the bottom line.

The only sub $30 antenna I can think of that would be worth the trouble would be a 102 inch whip from Radio Shack for 19.99. But you still need a mount and coax for it, and I think you stated that you didn't want a HUGE whip, right? But the 102 will generally outperform any other...

    Imax 2000 or maco v-5/8th

I find all the anecdotal "evidence" that some people employ to try to support conclusions/opinions about one omni antenna versus another to be unsound. If you take an antenna down that gave an S4 to a monitoring station a few miles away, then put up a different antenna and get an S5 at that...

    Imax 2000 or maco v-5/8th

I almost am married to Ashley Judd. I've seen her and she's really attractive, so I could have married her, except somebody else got to her before me.

You could go with a K40 roof/trunk mount for 45 bucks plus shipping. Better not to go any lower than that, or there's almost no point. You NEED a good antenna to make any use of CB. The Wilson 1000 would be (and is) my choice for a mobile antenna. They are a little pricey, but they are a...

    Galaxy 2547 vs. cobra 2000

I don't think the 142 is the same chassis as the 148/Grant/2000 dual conversion. The 142 I think is more like the Uniden Washington---it is just a single conversion RX. Someone once explained here on the forum why the RX in the Galaxy 959/2547 chassis isn't as good. It was something like too...

To follow up on what Moleculo was saying, the tests are quite easy to pass nowadays. If you go to eham.net and check out the online practice exams, you'll get an idea of what is required to get your license. This is a great forum for all things radio-- CB, Ham, Shortwave listening...

Another important distinction between CB and Ham is that CB does allow for business related communications, as in using the CB service for money-making (pecuniary) interests. Amateur (Ham) radio does NOT allow for business or money-making communication, with a very narrow exception for Hams to...

For a good starter CB antenna, you can't go wrong with the A99. Cheap, lightweight, plug and play, works decent for it's simplicity. If you want something a little better performing than an A99, but short of putting up a multi-element directional array, you could go with the Maco V-58, which...

Yes, a mobile type CB that normally operates off the car's electrical system can be used as a base station radio with a regulated power supply and base antenna. Lot's of people start out with a set like that. Get a decent antenna up as high as you can, feed it with a quality coaxial cable, and...

    10 Meter

It is a "de facto" calling frequency. At the end of the day, band plans are not mandatory anyway, just a good idea and common courtesy to follow them. As far as I know, 14.230 is not "officially" anything other than another 20 meter frequency, but it is the de facto SSTV calling frequency for...

    10 Meter

Listen on 28.400. If the band opens up, somebody will usually be on. If you make contact, try to remember to move to another frequency, thus leaving the calling freq open for others to use.

    OK automobile guys...

One thing that struck me as odd---the thermostat is on the bottom of the motor, so when I pulled the housing down, only a cup or two of fluid came out of that lower rad hose. Shouldn't that have caused all the fluid to drain out? Is it possible that that hose is blocked somehow? Even if the...

Just messed with it a little more. The plastic expansion tank is full, but I decided to open the rad cap and pour some pre-mix directly in. I didn't spill any, but it started dripping on the ground under the radiator. Started it, drove it around until the temp gauge went all they way up and...

1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Overheating. Replaced thermostat and gasket. Still overheating. Water Pump? Heater Core? There seems to be a film of some sort accumulating on the inside of the windshield. Related perhaps?
