Strange audio issue on Cobra 40 Plus

I'm trying to track down a problem with a Cobra 40 Plus that I acquired for free. It's putting out a 1.62Khz tone on both transmit and receive. I am unable to detect the tone on pin 6 of the audio amplifier, which is supposed to be input, but I am getting a strong tone on pin 2, which...

    Galaxy 2527/RCI 2950 (non-dx) board can't vary power.

I didn't check for defective potentiometers. I just checked that they weren't removed from the circuit. I will have to do that. D42 was there and tested fine, VR15 was there but not tested, and C10 was there and I didn't test it beyond making sure it wasn't shorted. I checked those before...

    Galaxy 2527/RCI 2950 (non-dx) board can't vary power.

I found something that is causing me to scratch my head a bit, so I thought I would see if anyone here knows where I should look. I have a galaxy 2527, which is the same board as the original 2950, and I am having a heck of a time figuring out what was done that is keeping me from having...

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

I bet that if you calculate all the actual time you do spend due to a customer's repair, and collecting the money, it ends up being closer to an hour than you think to do a 5 minute repair. As for having a 1 hour minimum, that is pretty normal.

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

$50/hr. is actually pretty cheap. Consider the amount of knowledge these guys need to have to be able to repair this stuff, add to that the cost of their equipment, and contrast that to the hourly rate of your local auto repair shop. It's hard to find an auto repair shop that has an hourly...

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

That entirely depends on what you consider to be a base station. The DX2547 is the only CB base station on the market right now. That is if you consider a base station to be a radio with an internal power supply. Because of that, it is tough to get an apples to apples comparison. On the...

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

If that is true, it is unlikely that it is the inductor. First, see if you can find the impedance of the meter, because as low_boy said, you could be loading the circuit with a cheap meter. Have you checked the voltages on the legs for the VCO? Specifically pins 8, 9 and 10. They should be...

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

Good call. It's been so long since I have seen a low impedance meter that I don't think about the impedance of the leads much.

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

It is sometimes hard to be sure if a variable inductor is bad or not. You can test to see if it is open or shorted, and it is very difficult to test for a core to coil short without special equipment and good specs, but in my experience with radios, the most common problem with them is the core...

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

If it does have a 3 pin regulator, it is likely a 78XX style regulator, probably 7808 or 7809 if it is supposed to be near 8 volts. If that is the case, unsolder pin 3 from the board, and check that there is +13.8V on pin 1, and that pin 2 is grounded. If those are correct, then test pin 3 for...

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

I guess another question would be, did you have problems with the radio prior to recapping it?

    Help alignment with 148 gtl

I've not seen that. Are you sure that you are looking at the voltage regulator? What part designation does it have on the board?

Sounds like a bad regulator. Depending on the age, it could need this service bulletin applied: http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/cobra/142gtl/graphics/cobra_142gtl_tech_note_1226.pdf

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

Unfortunately, the prices some of these guys charge to do repairs can't pay the bills for most people, and they certainly don't pay for the proper equipment. I honestly wouldn't trust someone to do a good job at less than $80 for a repair. Any repair. Keep in mind, I don't care what repair it...
