The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

No that would work for a quad at 125 ohm, this is around 270 ohms, the balun is very simple to make just coil 143 inches of coax, on a 6 inch form and wire as shown in the diagram, Made mine in 10 mins. Have swr 1.3 across all 40 channels, on both of my diamonds, one vertical one horizontal.

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

I have tested 2 coil baluns with this antenna, a 4:1 nd a 6:1 , I did not get great results best match has been with the 1/2 wave times velocity , coax balun. Getting nice low swr on my 2 diamonds at around 1.3 to 1, pretty flat across all 40 channels. I have one up vertical and one up...

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

Built another diamond antenna, used this balun design, on this one. Working well.

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

tree would be fine, much better a tree than putting any metal inside the loop, go for it, I hope you build this. I would be very interested in other peoples results, this one has really surprised me. I have had this up in 2 places, one with balun at the radio, one with balun at the antenna, both...

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

Just a note on the other side of the beam, people have asked. It is a piece of the same pipe with a bit of brick tywrapped inside; I weighed the balun and made a counter balance for the other side , just to make it hang nice, and the weight helps keep it tight. I also run masons line off each...

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

I highly recommend side mounting on a tower, I am getting 7 dbi off the front, and 4 off the back, and perfectly omni still. I have it about 63 inches off the tower. My loops used to suffer on the tower or were no better than in free space, but this one likes the tower and gets out better for sure.

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

I have had it at 36 to the feed and 46 feet. I like to see an antenna at min 36 to the feed if possible. This thing just works, quite amazing, I have a shop full of antennas I have built; this is the first one the locals went wow, what are you talking on, Nearly doubled my send/receive over my...

need help on cb radio setup

I run a 980 barefoot, 30 miles is never a problem, base to base. My antenna I built from wire is below

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

Running this with a 4:1 balun and a choke coil, at the feed of antenna, both wound on a scrap of white septic pipe, slides over the end of the centre support. Balun is 1/4 wave coax 75 ohm velocity factor of 6, the length is 143 inches, and the choke is a full 1/4 wave, with no velocity factor...

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

So have this up now at 50 feet to the top, getting out very well, I have moved the coax out of the loop, so it comes off the side feed, and away. The high voltage points at the bottom of the v, are no place for the coax to pass. Getting great swr, below 1.5 across the board.with coax out the...

Base antenna, High noise floor tips..

Ya router on the same circuit was a killer for me, even running off another circuit helps a lot, the other big killer, when the wife fires up the washing machine, it just puts 9 S units on the meter. You could try running an extension cord to the router see if powering it from a distance helps.

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

I hope to get it up higher over the next few days here it is modeled a little higher and over my tin roof, second story on a metal lower section mast and fiber glass upper pole within the loop area, I can verify this is much more omni than the quad loop this replaced, got some great reports off...

Base antenna, High noise floor tips..

I had to do some noise detective work myself. Ended up being a wireless internet router in the next room. I moved it down one floor, and rewired it. Took away 2 -s- units of my noise. All fixed. I now have less than 1 s unit of noise on ssb, and zero showing on am.

The Needle, narrow vertical loop antenna plan

Here is a drawing of my current antenna. It is a full wave loop, side fed , vertically polarized. I replaced my quad loop with this, as it has better takeoff angles for dx, and is omni directional. It is up at 36 feet to the feed and is working well. Have not had it on the dx yet, but getting...

    Loop Antenna Plan

That is a good trip for sure, I have not had a contact in Texas yet, Have made most of the East coast as far as Florida On my 12 watt bearcat 980, on the full wave loop, last summer was great, got out many times every day.

    Loop Antenna Plan

Here in eastern ontario, skip starts around april 15 runs to about sept. 15, Get the odd contact in the winter , but few and far between.

    Loop Antenna Plan

I have them around one full wave length, 36 feet to the feed point, higher is always better, up to about 1.5 wave lengths. 54 feet. After that you trade some dx for better local. I think any antenna for cb radio does very well at 36 feet to the feed. Loops will work at any height on a vertical...

    Loop Antenna Plan

not sure where you read over nine dbi, my model reads 6.15 dbi, which is around 4 dbd, which is well stated in most articles on quad loops, about double your standard vertical dipole, which really is what a loop is. Two dipoles in phase. I can attest to the effectiveness of loops, and concur...
