There are days I just don't turn on the radio because of all the crap out there. Then there are days I turn it on and sit on 42. Just to listen to the guys chat about something or other.
I'd say you'll be fine. Pretty sure it takes more than a few minutes keyed up with no antenna to do any real damage.

Depending on the colors of the meter, and the colors of the led, it might wash out certain colors. It's a cool idea! Be really easy to tell what mode your in that way!!
Depending on how you are switching the led, it might be possible to run 3 different leds that wouldn't interfere with the meter...
I think most of the older Uniden/ Cobra cb radios will do that. @loosecannon or Xit13, plus a few others should be able to answer that for you.
Loosecannon did a few mods on my Grant XL and removed that noise when I change channels.

I wasn't happy with losing the full transmit power when I kicked into ssb. I never bothered to run a switch for the full power delay. I figure that if I need lower transmit power I can always push a button and reduce power that way. I really just wanted to be able to run WFO with the ssb delay.
