I have a TS HDV350 behind a PC76XL (similar to your 29).
There is a variable in the PC76 and its ran turned all the way down. I see around 50 watts of dead key and 200 watts of swing...which is more than enough to get the job done.
The only thing I can see as a benefit using the TS 500 is...
Well, I was able to clean the threads up by running a tap through both halves, and a little cleaning with a file. Finally got the handle to thread completely through, and the shoulder to slide through as it should. So other than I had to work on a new antenna, its assembled now.
Might get...
Unless you get the 100 watt General Lee (which is basically what the HP40W is), a Connex 3300HP and General Lee are essentially the same radio. Both are (were) just a dual final radio capable of around 35 watts...not a 100 watt radio.
I like the HP40W because it has a high-low switch...on low...
I don't get the mosfet thing...most new radios are mosfet, my 100 watt radio is mosfets. I would have no issues running a mosfet amp...just need to umderstand you can't run them like a transistor amp.

I have a General HP40W that does 100 watts on high. Its using four mosfets, tuned by DTB. I get nothing but good reports.

I understand what you're saying, mine won't thread completely through. I may run a file through and see if there is a burr or something. Tomorrow...its been a rough couple days.

Nothing really to post a pict of...it just won't thread through the hole completely.
I just pulled it out and tried it again. The threads bottom on the smooth section of the handle...it won't thread through the hole completely.
I did find the cap for the whip...it was pinched inside the...
Yeah, mine bottoms on both halves...that smooth non-threaded section of the handle won't pass through either side.

Well, couple things right out of the package...the whip has no tip cover on it (cheap?) and both halves of the base is tapped (there is no way to put it together because the handle bottoms out before it should).
So in short, without drilling out the one half of the base; I have to ship this one...
Got the antenna in the mail today, haven't even gotten it out of the package.
First impression: I was expecting a tall stiff whip based on everything I read...stinger isn't any stiffer than my Wilson's? At least not enough to take notice about.
I will probably install it this weekend...I...
Personally, the thing that I noted that made a huge difference for me in DX was building a horizontal dipole. From what I remember, most DX is horizontal whereas most ground plane is vertically polarized.

I know my 959 was way off right out of the box...it took a good tech over an hour to fix it. More channels and more power are unnecessary...but having a good tuned radio is.
That's why I asked if anyone had been in the radio.
