Hope this doesn't sound naive but isn't the 8x series of coax the one with foam dielectic? If so I would not use it on long runs because during the heat of the summer the foam tends to move and you could wind up with some SWR issues. RG-8 or 213 would be a better choice IMO. YMMV 3's

To the OP. Use both the stick and a beam. Sometimes the beam won't pickup the skip because it's pointing in another direction. Use the stick to locate your conditions, then swing your antenna to hold a conversation. 3's
