Yes, the radio takes the same battery and 12V eliminator as the 888K (which I also own)
From what I could tell, the radio does NOT have the muffled audio.
I put my full review here:

Mine arrived a few days ago and it does everything as advertised. I haven't used it connected to an outdoor antenna and amp yet; but its repeater does work good from preliminary testing. The full duplex and true dual receiver alone make it worth it.

You will definitely make those repeaters and do pretty good on simplex too.
A lot of repeaters don't have their exact locations listed. Premium sites are sought and are highly kept secrets. Most tower space is donated to repeater owners and if you get everyone in town going after a specific...
I spent well over a year with just an HT. Talked on that thing all the time. Built a homebrew 2 meter ground plane and talked simplex all over too. I ended up buying an amplifier for it. I do have a mobile rig and another mobile as a base/echolink/packet rig now; but still use my HTs...
I use 220. My area has one repeater, and a second should be on the air in a couple weeks. With the Wouxun series of radios on the market (there is a 220 version) 220 is making a comeback. Some areas have lots of activity, others not so much.
I agree! The only.. and I mean ONLY reason someone would want such a thing is to annoy the hell out of someone deliberately. I wouldn't talk to anyone with one. I can handle a single tone on unkey, but that is it.
The 979 has got some decent reviews. I can't say what needs done with it. They really are good to work on, and don't need butchered to sound great, especially on AM, where they scream.
I have a 949, which I love. I just had to turn the modulation up some and the SSB ALC. SSB indicates NO...
I agree. Considering they are Class C... The ONLY thing a Class C amplifier can be used on is FM. That's why you hear all these people wasting their power as they bleed over 10 channels in each direction.
