Stacked the tower by hand by myself. Had a helper pull each antenna up with a rope and pulley. Wasnt fun getting the beam around the guy wires but we got the beam up in about 20 minutes.
I put up the 6 element and really did not like it! It was not as broadbanded and I had to get it dead on the station because the front end was so closed. I put the 4 element back up. I did get about a .5 S unit more gain if I had it DEAD ON them by testing with other stations on flat but it...
I have the 6 element assembled in the back yard 6 feet off the ground and tuned the best I can get it. One thing I notice is the 6 is not nearly as broadbanded as the 4. The SWR is 1.6 on 26.9 mhz and 1.5 on 27.5 on my 259 analyzer. Remember the 4 is 85' up and the 6 is 6' off the ground...
You see now why I put this part in my post now: "Does anyone have EXPERIENCE changing from one of these to the other?" If I get anywhere close to the 3db gain advertised it will be like doubling power and have better rejection. I got on last night for a while on AM and got radio checks a ways...
One guy had both 25' off the ground....one in his front yard and one in the back. The other guy took one down and put the other up. Its only $140 more + the gamma and i can use the other antenna for another project I want to try. I like experimenting with different things....its fun to me. I...
How true. My neighbor 2 miles away runs a Galaxy saturn and an 8 tuber doing 800 watts with an Antron 30' up. I stomp him with 100 watts every direction with LMR400 and an I-10K 93' up.
I talked to a couple of local guys that have had 4 element ~16' booms and ~30'+ boom 6 elements and they say its a noticable difference on transmit and receive so I have a M-106C on the way with a 5KW gamma match :) SHould have it up in a couple weeks.
I can talk skip just as well or better on my groundplane as the beam about 10% of the time. Skip stations seem to hold in better and put more signal on the beam 90% of the time. Some of them come up 4 or 5 S units when i go to the beam. With the polarity changing all around with skip its not...
I agree with you. I also have 2 kids to spend time with. I talk on the radio maybe 4-6 hrs/week. I got on 27.505 last night for 10 minutes and did my check in with the Bochas and turned it off! The only time I get carried away is when I get a new toy :)
I noticed about 1 S unit gain in transmit and receieve going from an IMAX to an I-10K mounted at the same location on the same day with less TVI also. The IMAX is much quicker to assemble and cheaper tho.
Thanks for all the opinions. I think I will hold off doing any changing and look for more replies especially from people that have done real world testing on these antennas.
I have it on a tower 85' to the boom and an I10K 8 feet above that so its pretty high up. I love my ground plane and thats keeping me from doing a full quad. Dont get me wrong it talks REALLY well because I am doing about 2kw bird through it but I'm like everyone else just looking for a little...
