I see that this radio is being compared to the UV 5R series. Was/is the UV 5R radio a good radio? I just bought a new one from Amazon.com for $30 shipped. I don't know much about it except the manual doesn't help much with functions like channel memory, tone select, etc.
I am really happy with Times Microwave LMR 200UF in the mobile. It is low loss RG58 so it is very thin to help with maneuvering through the vehicle. It has a very high power handling. It also has low attenuation. It is much less than the price of LMR 400.
I think the quality of the components is more of a factor than what country it was made in. As time goes on they use cheaper/lower quality components. IF they are made in Japan, the radios will still be built with junk. Can't get chicken salad out of chicken scat no matter who is putting it...
I wish I could say that I played a larger role than I did. I didn't organize anything. I was just a part of a bigger picture. I admit that I was willing to put in more time, but being an ex infantry soldier I believe I am just more accustom to the lack of sleep than most. I was also looking...
Also re-enforces the need to tell people "this is the exact route I am taking, this is exactly where I'll be." With the nearest cell coverage about 50 miles away, it is a must. I've done it a hundred times too. I've said, there isn't much sign here so lets move onto another spot. Once your...
I don't normally buy into the myths surrounding the drawbacks of dual antennas on trucks. Even I'll say that on a 4 wheeler the losses would outweigh the gains. In that instance, a single whip would outperform a dual. One thing I would worry about on a wheeler is sufficient counterpoise. You...
Friday morning of Nov 29 my best friend, Ryan Stevens, left Millinocket to go hunting. Northwestern Maine is large and uninhabited forest. Logging industry has made thousands of drivable roads that spider web through the entire region. If one were to look on a map and see the vast span of...
Again, why is the modulator only producing 14W peak? The 2290 with an 8W input from the radio should put out 50W @12.5V and automobiles circuits when running as well as power supplies in your house operate at 13.8V which increases the output of the amp. SO, why is the modulator only producing...
I was talking to both of you. The first two sentences were to you, the rest was to DXing440. I was just saying to you that I agreed with your suggestion of Bells CB. I was going to suggest to Bells CB as I've seen 20W 980s come from his bench.
I was just going to suggest that. I've seen a few videos of his tunes on the 980 reaching almost 20W peak on the bench. I would expect the number to drop a little once installed in a real world, working environment. A tech bench is going to be as close to a "perfect" scenario as you can get...
Yes, you can use the spring. The spring will act as part of the radiating element and thus, add length to it. The whip will have to trimmed to compensate for the extra length. Just remember that the antenna may not work as efficiently with the spring installed.
The loading coil is the bottom portion of the antenna, where it screws onto the NMO mount or trunk lip. The whip and mast attach to the loading coil unless the spring is installed. If the spring is installed, it would be under the spring.
I do happen to do research well and am logical. DTB states that any improper mod that exists on a radio that has been sent for repair, will be undone and corrected. Also stated is that if the owner intends on keeping the improper mods in the radio to -"send it to someone else!! We do NOT allow...
I will agree with Robb. Loading coils really should be above any surrounding metal. But I have been able to get ok results on a trunk lid.
The shorter the antenna, the more difficult they can be to tune up. It is common for K30, Little Wil, etc. to have an inch or two trimmed off before...
And if you do find that you need the grounding braid, you can make it. If you have any old coaxial cable around, strip off the outer jacket. Then pull the shielding off of the center conductor. Cut the shielding to the lengths you need and solder on some eye connectors.
I would get the MLB2700 as that is what is meant for the frequency range you need. Remember that it covers down to 25 MHz so it will be long for 27 MHz. You will probably have to trim some of the whip. Grind some paint where the set screws of the trunk lip hit the trunk. That is probably the...
The mount doesn't have anything to do with the resonant frequency of the antenna. If the antenna screws, properly, onto the mount it should work. I can't see your install or know your skill levels, so I can only give some suggestions to check. I don't want to insult your intelligence, so...
Is it possible that you purchased a radio (the "cheap" one) that had a modification done before you received it? Most 2M radios are capable of VFO into other frequency ranges for RX. There is factory modification to prevent transmit capabilities outside of the allocated 2M band (144-148 MHz)...
