My mistake. I meant to say it is for neutralization. It's to neutralize the final. Early sets had this. Later sets did not. As far as noise on transmit. Did you try just jumping pins on mic jack to rule out dirty contacts? If so check the tube sockets. Then check the 6bq5 by tapping on it...
First thing I would do is try a 7558. The tube in there is a 12at7 which is in no way a final for that radio. Someone probably just stuck it in there. Looks like it's an early transmitter without the alc circuit. Also someone changed out the small variable cap on the tube for a larger one. That...
But.... None of the radios you like will be around a half century from now. A refurbished Browning that is done right will out talk and out receive any new Chinese radio. Put a small amp behind it and they can't be beat. And there will still be working Brownings another hald century from now if...
If you want something that will look good but isn't exactly original I would hammer it flat using a block of wood and a hammer. Then find some vintage cloth speaker grill cloth that you like the look of. Use some 3m spray adhesive and cover it with cloth...
Check the anode plate cap on top of the tubes. Make sure both the screws are tight. Also look at the parasitic resistors coming off the top of tube and see if they are burnt or cracked. BUT BE SURE ITS UNPLUGGED AND DISCHARGED BEFORE DOING SO.
All this I need a flat swr stuff is really nonsense. 1.5 is perfect. 1.5 to 1.2 will make absolutely no difference to you or the person hearing you. Only difference is the swr meter you are looking at gives you a warm cuddly feeling.
Unplug the fuse for the factory radio. You will see noise dissappear. Had a new Sierra a few years back and it was the screen on the radio. Even with radio turned off I got the noise. As soon as key was turned to the on position. Even with truck not running.
No AM. But one of the best SSB radios. I do have a link to a small board you can install to get AM. But I wouldn't. If you want AM get an AM rig.
