This afternoon around 4:15P.M. eastern I was anchored off of one of the barrier islands down here right off of the Gulf of Mexico. As usual, I had my trusty Cherokee AH 100 walkie talkie. Unfortunately, however, I was limited antenna-wise to my little 2' plus walkie-talkie antenna. My "Big Stick" which appears in my avatar took a dive after 20+ years and my BNC/TNC adapter on my 4', center loaded walkie antenna has become unusable.
No one heard me, but I heard stations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. However, the skip was very sporadic. They'd be booming in one minute and they would be barely audible the next time they keyed up.
I have a simple but pretty effective portable 1/4 wave dipole rig and a tripod to go with it. I can set up the whole contraption up on the front of my open fisherman in about 5 minutes. If there is any skip rolling in this upcoming week, I'll take my dipole rig and spend some social isolation time shooting skip anchored off of some remote island down here.
