11 meter is very quiet?

This afternoon around 4:15P.M. eastern I was anchored off of one of the barrier islands down here right off of the Gulf of Mexico. As usual, I had my trusty Cherokee AH 100 walkie talkie. Unfortunately, however, I was limited antenna-wise to my little 2' plus walkie-talkie antenna. My "Big Stick" which appears in my avatar took a dive after 20+ years and my BNC/TNC adapter on my 4', center loaded walkie antenna has become unusable.

No one heard me, but I heard stations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. However, the skip was very sporadic. They'd be booming in one minute and they would be barely audible the next time they keyed up.

I have a simple but pretty effective portable 1/4 wave dipole rig and a tripod to go with it. I can set up the whole contraption up on the front of my open fisherman in about 5 minutes. If there is any skip rolling in this upcoming week, I'll take my dipole rig and spend some social isolation time shooting skip anchored off of some remote island down here.

S&W357 Is that you I am hearing with 177 Iowa? 73's
Ocean One Cape Hatteras

Yes Sir that was me talking to 177 "Dave" near Sioux City Iowa. He has a great sounding station. Talked to him on both LSB & USB. He had never tried USB on his radio and wanted to check it out.

Pretty good afternoon for DX contacts here today. Illinois (2) Oklahoma (2) Iowa (3) Minnesota (3) Mississippi (1) Missouri (4) Wisconsin (1) Brazil (1)

Hi Red, some CB radios are AM only -

Cobra 29, Uniden 68 are examples

other CB radios have LSB and USB modes-

President McKinley, Uniden 980, Galaxy 959 are examples

If your CB radio does not have a mode switch with USB/LSB lettering than it is likely AM only.
