North coast of the USA.... Da UP!
A lot of water went under the bridge but the wait has come to an end.... Three days ago I plunked down 125 dollars and now I am the proud owner of an Emperor TS5010! :D
Not that it is perfect but it looks nice, few scratches, a little dusty. But the biggest fault was sporadic drifting on SSB, not much mind you but just enough to play "chase you, chase me" with the clarifier... :headbang
I thought it might be the voltage circuits so I opened her up and checked from the power cord forward... Something did not look right... :glare:
Brown stuff near the base of the two main filter caps, under magnification there also was some green crud, corrosion!
I remember reading somewhere on the NET about leaking filter caps and the damage that can occur. So I went to Rat Shack for some new ones. Only found 1000 µf @ 35 volts, So I bought two for $1.59 each.
Desoldered the old ones and cleaned the board, powered her up and much better.... or so I thought... :cursing:
Tapping on the side of the rig I could make the fault come and go and with the top cover off I put some pressure on the main board near the 8 volt regulator, tapping now would not make the fault happen!
Turning the rig over I remover the speaker cover and the daughter board, magnifying the area near the legs of the 8 volt regulator I could see a bad, intermittent joint on the input leg! :w00t:
Checking the whole area over I re-soldered all three legs of the regulator and no more "wobbly" SSB!
Caps can age and leak or short and solder joints can part or crack, (mechanical motion from being mobile?)

The radio now works great! Now I know it is a step (half a step) down from the famous HR2510 but I always wanted one and now I do.....

Sorry for the long praddle on this but I wanted to pass on my findings of some small but big problems that can happen to a rig, especially a mobile.

P.S. This tail is not finished.... The radio has a brother!
Till next time!

sweet......

Nothing sweeter than finding that radio you always wanted.
Then discovering it has this 'teeny tinny' little problem.
Then making it all better.

Nice trouble-shooting!

Way to go!

Congrats on getting (and successfully troubleshooting) the rig. I wanted one of them in the worst way years ago. Enjoy!
