Have an amp with the driver pill blown. Its a 1 2290 driving 2 2879s wonder if the pill would be hard to replace and if it would be possible to replace the 2290 with a 2879. I know how to solder how much trouble it is to replace. Thanks in advance rusty sorry for the dumb questions i still learning

If the amp had a 2290 in there then that's what the rest of the amp was set up for as well. Unless you plan to rework the input section to match up to a 2879 just replace it with what was there.

What were you hoping a 2879 would accomplish for you? The reason I say this is a 1x2 is not an ideal design. For two 2879 finals a radio alone has PLENTY of drive. When a driver final is added in a 1x2 or 1x4 the driver has to be swamped down so as to not overdrive the last stage of finals in the amp.

Bottom line is by adding a larger final like a 2879 you would just compound the problem and need even more swamping resistors to eat up the extra drive. All your doing is making more heat.

You can run a 2879.
all you would have to do is wrap the input transformer 5 or 6 wraps to lower the output of the driver transistor so you will dead key around 40 to 50 watts . alot easier than those new 2290's that you have to add more capacitance to the one side of the input transfomer . :bdh:

Yeah; you could - but . . . seem like a perfect waste of time/money. Since all he needs to do is disable the driver transistor. A pair of 2879's can easily be driven adequately with 15 watts from any tuned-up radio. Seems that those who run these 1x2 or 2x4 amps have nothing but problems with getting the radio output drive adjusted right - or end up having repair bills for fixing the driver. Or worse.

I don't know all that much about amps; but I do read about this often and it seems to be the solution that many go with. Never done it myself. Had a friend that got a TS-667 from his brother because he thought the amp was blown and his brother can fix radios/amps. He took the driver transistor out of it (it was blown) and turned it into a solid TS-500. Works great since then.

that is another situation that was not brought up anyway . and what radio does 15 watt dead ? lol lol lol . a pair of 2879 dont really take off until you put 6 watt dead in them at least. rule of thumb you have to understand what the hell ya doing to when it comes to drive and how much you swing also. there is nothing wrong with running a box with a 3 pill or a 2x4 configuration . you would not be dead keying 15 watts out of a radio into a 3 pill or a 1x4 or a 2 x 4 . because you would probably swinging like 100 watts plus and blowing the shit out of everything in the circuit . you got to look at the transistor specs very carefully guys and no your drive limitations .

last but least !!! do u no how to disable the driver section . dont confuse these guys on here. you will wind up spending more money if disconnect the wrong wires , then you will have an open circuit , then your radio finals pop .
<proof>

My mistake . . . I meant 15 watts PEP. If you can get a TS-350 to take input swing up to 20 watts PEP; this board should be able to do it. Not sure that the owner of the amp in this thread can do that, sure an amp tech could - though.

keep in mind using a 2879 is only good for driving 4 2879 .

if you do it in a 3 pill configuration. you would have to wrap the input transformer at least 6 turns to keep that dead key down . a 1446 would be better and you will stay more linear with a good clean strong carrier.

I would recommend just replacing the blown device and being careful not to over drive it with the radio and the best piece of advice I could possibly give is not to listen to this clown.

Your antenna system does not work in the frequencies I operate at and no one listens to analog AM broadcast this day and age so take your Geritol and keep wishing you were

thats funny !!!!! but u misread again . if your a licenced ham i feel sorry for the people listening to you. if i were you i would stop high jacking peoples posts , its very rude . the guy asked a ? about amplifiers and i gave it to em . if you dont like the answers thats your problem . looks like this forum needs to have a section just for you MACKmobile43 like cb assholes.com and mauldroppers.com . back ya bags and go there and be a clown there. you will get a complex acting like that on here, ok .*Don`t do it*

I have a dave made with a 2290 driving 4- 2879 Toshiba. My galaxy has about 2 watt dead key and will swing around 14-15 watt. Im I hurting my linear or do I need to give it more ? Oh I'm giving the linear 15volts.

Dave Made M200 1x SC2290 > 2x SC2879 recommended 2W DK.

It is my understanding the older units were 1x 2879 driving 2x 2879.
Don't know when the change occurred or what other changes were made.
The M200 introduced a gain in SWR, approaching 2:1; too close for comfort.
I prefer my M80; ample mobile or base preamp.
