anyone know what would cause a 2985DX display to dim out totally black every time I key up. It is all stock and never messed with inside infact it is only a couple months old and was working fine till this morning when I went to talk. I checked the connections of antenna and everything is perfect. I tried another radio in its place and it`s fine so it cant be but the 2985dx. I bought it new so if there is a problem I can send it back but maybe im missing something. :(

Do you have any power output when transmiting?
If you have a multi-meter, pull the cover and see if the voltage from the power supply is dropping when you key the mic.
That is were I would start.
Let us know.
Also, Ranger has a good warranty program.

I dont have a multi meter but I can get one from work on mon. I did try the turning the rf power up and down when I keyup on a clear channel, the display brightens as I turn power down.

If it is my power supply and I check it like you say, wont the broken factory seal void the warrenty? or is ranger pretty forgiving on this.

also, I have my radio on a outlet that I can turn off at a switch, when I turn radio off then leave room I turn the outlet switch off so there is no power to radio at all. will this hurt it or should I leave power to radio on all the time and just use radio switch?

Airplane1 if radio is still under warranty i would call the original shop that you bought it from and see what the best approach would be,either send it back to shop or Ranger.Breaking seal might void warranty. Good luck.

Well I already broke the seal. I put the coversion modual in it that came with the radio. I guess I should take it out befor sending it back. I will call Palco electronics about the problem because it is only two months old and still under warrenty.

It is just strange that it just started doing this after only two months of operation. :(

Well I get a email from RCI telling me to send it back so I can get it fixed under warrentee. they were very nice about it and very sorry I have a problem. I just need to pay for shipping insured to them and they will fix it and pay shipping back to me.

RCI seems to be a decent company.
My father-in-law has a 6900F-HP that had developed a problem with the freq counter, a few years after he first bought it. They replaced the freq counter at no charge and made it all right.
You should be ok sending it back to them.

Catch you on the radio sometime soon Roger.

Been a while Paul, I hope to hear you on airwaves soon. :D

I sent radio to RCI and they emailed me that it got there safe but that was over 3 weeks maybe 4 weeks ago, but no word since. I am calling them after work today to see whats up. :(

Well got the 2985DX back today :D . Hooked it up and wala, not fixed, does the same thing as it did when I sent it :( :x . I just wanted it to work like it did for the first month(no dimming at all) before it started this problem.

Now I wont spend another 45.00 to send it in again so I emailed them to see what they will do. I love this radio an waited 4 weeks for nothing.

Maybe I should fix it myself? Cand someone walk me throu the process if ranger wont pay to pick it up and send it back?

Thanks,
AP

oh, I wanted to post what the repareman from ranger said he found and fixed.

adjusted transitor driver current bias set to high.complete function test all modes QC pass. display now stays lit when keying AND MODULATING.

Jeff,

I am going to check if the voltage of the power supply drops when keying and will let you know. then maybe you can tell me what to do next.

Justin,

I am going to do what you said you said and replace the TO-3 transistor. Change all of them over to a 2N3771 and turn the power up to 14.2. Can you tell me what all this does so I can understand?

Thanks in advance,
Roger

Just want to fill you all in on the 2985DX situation. I contacted ranger and they sent ups to pic it up at there expence and check it out again and put it on priority status. :)

Well after another three/four weeks I got it back. :) the problem is fixed and it is not dimming a all any more. :D :D :D

The work order said they replaced the transformer because it was bad. I tried to tell them that the transformer was acting like it was bad plus they had to replace the power pass transitors.

I just hope it lasts for a while with no more problems. I hate being without my radio.
