2995DX used, what to look out for

Going to look at a used 2995DX base and was wondering what to look out for.

I have some basic understanding of the rig as I own a 2970N2.

The older 2295 units have a green display, standard power supply and (2) 2290 pills? Maybe there's an interim unit with switching power supply?

The newest have a black display, switching power supply and MOSFET's?

I'm going to assume that the one I'm going to look at is an older version with green display. Can you tell by the serial number on these what year it was produced?

Maybe he'll let me look inside if it's not secured by a tamper resistant sticker so I can see if anything has been altered. Just not sure where to look for any non-essential mods. If it's not on 11 meters yet I'll need to procure an e-chip and where can I get one?

I'll take my Wilson 1000 antenna, a watt meter and some coax jumpers if he doesn't have an antenna set up.

I already have a nice new MeanWell 15 VDC 40 amp switching power supply I can drop in :D

If it is clean, functions as it should, and is priced right there you go. If it works fine why screw around with "dropping" a different power supply in?

Regardless of whether it has the 2290's or the Mosfets, just make sure that the power is not turned up real high. The power supplies used in the radios aren't big enough to max tune the radio. Even the new switching power supplies aren't enough. That's the only thing you have to watch for.

Personally, the 2995's with the 2290's sound a little nicer than the mosfet versions, provided they are properly tuned.

I've had several of both types across my bench since they were introduced, and those have been my findings.

If the radio is missing the E-chip, you could probably get one from Copper Electronics, or H&Y.

Good luck!

~Cheers~

The only thing I had to mitigate on mine was the obnoxiously loud internal fan noise, this fan being over the power supply unit cooling it. I added a 100ohm pot in the 12V lead to the fan and mounted on rear to turn the speed down. Still moves plenty of air and quiets it considerably but added some foam insulation on front bottom and left side of unit to help block the remaining noise from firing out the front on the rig and getting into the mic audio, assuming a power desk mic is used. An un-noise-abated unit 95Dx can be spotted on the radio a mile away by that damn fan noise coming through the audio. Otherwise good radio. Check check on not peaking out the SSB power adjustment inside, it will trip a protection circuit and shut the radio down on peaks.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. Just picked it up so I'll see if its good to go. Got it for a good price and it's clean with the original packaging. Came with a 575 M6 mic to boot. Thank you previous owner.

I saw that R & R was offering the updated up-sized power supply like the one I have sitting around. This rig must surely have the older style power supply as it is surprisingly heavy. Just wondering if I should drop in the Meanwell sooner than later. It's rated for 40 amps at 15 volts
