got a small short vid of it:

Wx 162.4000 mhz remix - YouTube

sent out some text and i guess i missed the ass end of the rare dx on VHF:headbang

2 meters can ' sort of' skip at times, but it is rare.

There is a cold cap skip, usually about 200 to 300 miles in distance. The signal will bounce in a cold area that is close to or in contact with the ground. One good way to explain it is when you have your favorite broadcast radio station tuned in and you are hearing another station matching it or actually stronger than your fav station..This is fairly common

Then there is tropospheric(spelling) ducting.

this can actually make quite a hop. This is uaually a colder layer of air between two warmer layers.the signal will make its way into the narrow layer of colder air and bounce inside that layer sometimes covering 1000 miles or better

Gorden Hale ( The Radio Shack study book guy) holds the record for this making a contact with Hawaii from his base in Southern California....

So in a way 2 meters can have DX or skip

DX Info Centre

Navigate through the site, has VHF openings predicted, usually accurate.

2M does do DX, SSB and FM.

I know an OP that has made a contact from NOLA into Canada on 2m SSB when the band is open.

I have Made it from FL to Texas on 20 watts and a set of stacked 13 element yagi's.

It's called tropospheric ducting. Happens a lot in the early spring and sometimes in the fall.

When I lived in Norfolk, VA I could occassionally get into repeaters up the coast into MD and PA with an HT. I'm on the west side of MI now and during the spring when this happens I can get into repeaters in IL and WI and work simplex into those states as well. Lots of fun when it happens.

The 2m band can open up almost any time however spring thru fall is the best time. It happens a lot when the air is cool at night and heats up rapidly in the morning. It forms a distinct boundary between warm and cool air layers that will refract radio waves. The principle is the same as when you put a stick into the water. The water is denser than the air and the light bends causing the stick to look broken. Radio waves bend for the same reason only they get trapped between two such layers and travel to a point where they can break out. Picture a golf ball being shot down a furnace duct and you will get the gist of it. Coastal areas are more prone to ducting.

I have worked into repeaters well over 100 miles on 5 watts from an HT when the band was open. I have also worked over 200 miles into Sydney Cape Breton on several occasions on 2m SSB and the person I spoke with has routinely worked from there to Boston 600 miles away and even a contact into the Carolinas about 1000 miles away. DX does happen on 2m but the mode of propagation is different than that which usually happens on HF.

Yep dx does happen

'e skip'. usually june or july is your best chance. when 6m e skip is short distance & intense, check 2m ssb. while tropo-type propagation on 2m can range from 100-1000 miles, it is weather-system related. e skip on 2m can reach to 1000 miles as well, but it happens for the same reason it happens on 11m....and 10m....and 12m....and 6m....ionized particles.......

None of my HT's have ssb option for 2 meters. Now my HF rigs do...... well I missed out on it. Next time ill be prepaired.
Great info guys

On rare occasion (last time was at the peak of the last sunspot cycle) there are some strange effects over the Pacific.

During the summer of 2004 there was a three- week period when there were daily duct openings from Southern California to Hawaii. I would stake out a liely spot on a ridgeline in San Clemente and wait for an opening. I was using a 5/8 wave magmount with a Yeasu VX-5R HT.

On two separate instances about two weeks apart I worked the WH6CZB repeater on Diamond Head, from about 600 foot elevation.

Great times!

Check out 144.205 usb @ 8am,there are a bunch of guys on every morning talking, there are some big stations that check in,tons of aluminum up and many running kw amps.they are a bunch of good guys to talk to,check it out.
