I JUST BOUGHT A SET OF M104C. PUT THEM ON A POLE 8 FEET OF THE GROUND AND GOT AN SWR OF 1.6 ON THE FLAT SIDE. WENT UP THE TOWER SET THE ON THE FLAT SIDE CHECKED SWR IT WAS FINE. FLIPPED THE VERTICAL SWR WENT HAYWIRE. 2 ON 1 2.5 ON 20 AND 2.8 ON 40. THE ANTENNAS ELEMENTS ARE COMPLETLY OBOVE THE TOWER BY ABOUT 3 FEET. ANY IDEAS? COULD THE MAST PIPE BE INTERFERING WITH THE ANTENNA? I AM USING A SC 80 METAL PIPE. SO I FLIPPED BACK TO THE FLAT SIDE AND HAVE BEEN USING THEM LIKE THAT BUT I DONT REALLY LIKE THEM LIKE THAT BECAUSE THEY DO GREAT IN DX LAND BUT WITHIN 150 MILES OR SO THEY DONT SEEM TO DO SO WELL. BUT MOST PEOPLE AROUND HERE RUN VERTICAL BEAMS MAYBE THATS WHY. IF ANOTHER MAN IS RUNNING FLAT SIDE I PEG HIS NEEDLE TO THE WALL. ANY HELP ON THE SWR?

TRIED ALL THAT BUT STILL NO LUCK, MEASUERD 5 TIMES, EVEN EMAILED MACO, BUT THEY JUST TOLD ME THE SAME THING AS THE INSTUCTIONS DID NOT REALLY ANY HELP AT ALL!!! I THINK I MIGHT SELL THEM AND TRY A DIFFERENT ANTENNA. BUT STILL WOULD LIKE TO FIGURE OUT THIS MYSTERY!! :shock:

Maco

keep them on the flat side and put a imax 2000 on top of it .You get the best of both worlds

You MUST retune the antenna when switching between horizontal and vertical!

As an example, the Avanti Moonraker IV antenna has the following measurments for the horizontal and the vertical:

Horizontal = 24.625"
Vertical = 22.500"

While you have the antenna down, why not take a look at this:
http://www.signalengineering.com/ultimate/4_element_yagi.html
Although this antenna is modeled in the horizontal plane, a paragraph near the end talks briefly about the differences of the antenna when rotated from horizontal to vertical. This teaches us that there is a difference between the two polarizations!

The MACO instructions do state that you need to adjust the gamma match for lowest SWR, so I'd start there.

BTW, you said "bought a set" and "them". Are you phasing these antennas together? If so, HOW? What is the spacing?

This is a pet peeve of mine. I see a lot of people refer to a single yagi antenna as a "set of beams." A Maco 4 element antenna is a beam. Two or more of them are beams. :D
