Does the dimmer switch just switch between 8V and 12V?

I have a 68XL that acts wierd when I flip the switch. Segments that aren't normally used for the channel selected will glow faintly on some channels. It'll also seemingly change channels, 14 toggles between 19 and 14 when I use the switch.
Other channels have similar issues, but not all. Some that don't have the faint glowing segments are unaffected.

I unsoldered the DSC to use for talkback, soldered the wires together as switched in the off position, could the iron being close to the SMD components damage them?

WTF??????? A second 68 has a channel problem. Lost the center segment on the right channel display. On channels that use this segment(like 8 or 3), there's no RX or TX.

But hit the channel 9 switch, and the segment and the TX/RX are there.

This radio has been used for weeks since I've had it, never a problem. :x

sometimes dirty switches can cause all kinds of problems like your having , but could be other things as well , Uniden has had a lot of call backs on those radios over the years, they sell a lot of them as refurbs. I personally have not had any of the problems that you seem to be having with yours and I've had and gone through about a half a dozen of them over the last few years. I would guess to say your right about the 8 volt and 12 volt for the dim/brt switch. In normal cb mode , push on the board and see if the l.e.d.s come on and off , if so ,that could be a cold solder joint in the radio somewhere , but I have had many an older radio that did what yours was doing and cleaning every switch and pot on the front end of the radio tended to fix many problems if not all of them. Tech cleaner spray will work , but I have also used Ronson lighter fluid when I had nothing else and it worked very well. I have seen and dealt with radios that looked like they were drug through mud, rain, sleet and snow and still were able to be brought back to life . Many CB radios are tough (not all) You can throw them in a swiming pool , take them out and let them throughly dry out , chances are they will work again , meters may be gone forever in them , but still can be changed. Where did you get this radio ? Was it new and just started acting up on you ?

Opened it up last night, and found a chunk of something that looked like hot glue in the rear of the disc on the rotary switch.

Pulled it out and all is well again.

I don't remember using an XForce? :P

Well, it was.

Problem started again last night.

Found a narrow (3/32") strip (1 1/4"] of shiny, twisted metal on the front top of the channel selector, just ahead of the main PCB.

Removed it, and still have the problem.

Must've shorted the selector PCB and damaged a component.
:x
