I just got my new to me 98vhp!(y)

It did not come with a fuse in the power cord and the cord is short so I'm going to have to build my own power cord for this radio. It did come with the connector that plugs into the back so its not a problem making a power cord. My question is what size fuse or fuses to use? It has been peaked and according to my cheep-ass meters it swinging just under 300W. I have a 50 amp fuse in-line on the positive wire 6" from the batteries in the Kenworth but fuses in the power cord I remove daily would make me feel good too.

So what size do you recommend?

Got me stumped...
I just sold a 95T2 a few weeks back, and I can't recall what size the fuse was. I just read the Galaxy manual for your radio on their website - and it didn't say either.
But that doesn't matter too much. Since it is putting out more power than the stock fuse would have allowed for, you may need one of a slightly higher value.

I agree Robb. What I found was (these are stock numbers from Galaxy) Amp drain = AM 25W and SSB 40W.

I'm thinking of going with a fifty but I'd love to hear from folks running these radios. What size fuses they have popped and what held fast and true.

If that radio at lull power were to draw a total of 400 watts @ 13.8 volts; that would be 25 1/3 amps.

I'm not quite sure if using a 30 amp fuse would be right.

The fuse holder will still work - but a bigger fuse is necessary...

No it won't. If you wish to run a 50 amp fuse you need a different "holder".

"Works with up to 30A, 12/24VDC mini blade fuses"

DX 98VHP

50 Watt Glass Fuse sounds like the ticket! I do have one of these in line at the battery but the radio is 15 ft from there.

Do you all think I should add another one or just go with the one that is 6" from the battery?

I am a trucker and you do want that fuse as close to the battery as you can get it. That way if the positive wire does short out against metal around the battery box, the wire will burn to the fuse and not burn down your truck. I also ran a fuse ( geez can't remember the amps ) oh maybe a 15 amp fuse on the negitive side. I done this because i slip seat my operation and one time on my Connex 4300hp i hooked it up backwards and i had that double fuse set up and i am glad that i did. All it done was blew the neg. fuse. Something to think about.

Well, this is what I've come up with.
I already have a 50 amp glass fuse right by the battery on the positive side so I guess I really don't need to be adding one up by the radio. All my radios are taken out of the truck nightly. Never left in the truck so to cut down on the chance of hooking it up backwards I pull in Anderson quick disconnects. It only goes one way!

So all I need to do is made me a nice jumper from the radio to the power cable I have on the dash. Both ends of the jumper with quick disconnects and I'm done.

Thank you all for the input and helping me come to a conclusion on what is best!
