I know that there's a secton for antennas but I wasn't sure if this more for CB Radios or Antennas ... Here it goes anyways .

I've been using an Antron 99 base antenna for about 5 years now and I've decided to look around for a new antenna before it's time is up ...

What I wanted to know is what you guys feel is a good aluminum or airplane aluminum base antenna to use ?

Thanks

Vertical?
Were do you live, what kind of weather to you have to deal with, and what are you looking for as far as price range. The answers to these questions will help.

yeah you're right AudioShockwav , I forgot to mention a few things .

I'm looking for a Vertical antenna and I'm in N.Y. state , and I'm not really sure about the price range .... as low as possible but not afraid to pay few extra dollars if you know what I mean .

Hi,

Since you are using for CB
Since also you want Vertical and considering Ground Plane

the answer is simple.
for base station vertical for CB is Jay's Interceptor I-10K
www.a1antennas.com

take it from a NYer
anyways
i have nothing but high marks in using his antenna

i use one myself
also set up a friend down the road

i would be surprised to ever find a better working vertical CB antenna......then add to how well it stands up to the worst of weather..

well it is the best
but

it also costs a bit

i used to use the A99 and thought it a decent antenna
then got Jay's Interceptor I-10K
Night and Day difference

So now i gave my A99 to a friend who is unwilling to spend the money for the I-10K..
and when talking skip...am told simply...hey what type of beam you using...when i say it is not a beam, they do not believe me

i should also say..
it is not exactly a small antenna
also you will need use nothing but heavy duty mounts

hope that helps you

I had checked out the I-10k actually and it does look like a good antenna ... but I was wondering what you thought about the "Super Scanner" beam anteannas ?

Super Scanners are a good antenna if you have limited space, and want to be able to "switch direction" The problem is that antenna was made by Antenna Specialist, they have not been built for a while, you might find one used, but chances are real slim that you can find any new old stock.
Same deal with the PDL II, good gain in a small space, but no longer made, and very hard to find parts for.
Do you get a lot of ice with wind loads were you are at?

The I-10K is the premier omni directional antenna. Nothing comes close.

The Super Scanner is a neat antenna. It uses three 1/2 wave verticals and switches directions by placing elements in and out of phase from eachother. With all three elements in phase, you had an omni pattern with some gain. The power output is limited to about 500 watts, or suffer relay arcing. I'm sure you will hear stories of guys who put more through them.

The Super Scanner's phasing lines are probably shot and need to be replaced. Not a simple thing unless you know the correct equations for the replacement cable.

There were two versions of the Super Scanner. One had a shorted phasing line that hung down from the switch box.

I saw a new in the box antenna on e-bay and people beat eachother up to pay way too much for an OK antenna.

Don't get me wrong, the Super Scanner was a neat antenna and worked well for which it was designed. I'd rather have an I-10K. Oh thats right, I already do!

if you already have an antron 99 and its working well i wouldnt go to a different ground plane even if it is the best in the world for $300 . id get a rebuilt rotor and controll box at sparkys for $130 and invest the rest into a small beam , 3 or 4 elements .
much more versatile than a bigger ground plane or a super scanner ... the beam performance will lay waste to the GP/SS .
assuming (i know  ) your current mast is stable enough just stack your current 99 over the rotor on a 10 foot peice of mast . plus that extra 10 foot of height will improve the performance of your 99 . dont forget to make a proper ground and use quality coax .

is jay still backed up on the i10s ? wernt some people waiting a year or so for one ?

I don't know if STEVE is backed up or not. I sent him an e-mail and haven't heard back yet. The 1-year wait is old news from a while ago and doesn't apply here.

Raccoon, I have a A99 up and working that is almost 30 years old. I have refinished it several times, but it works great and I live 60 miles north of the Texas Gulf Coast.
