I'm trying to cut down on my bench radios. I have a 2510 for SSB on 11 meter, a Cobra 2000 I use for standard CB channels and a Icom 730 for HF.

I'm wanting to hear what some of you do for radios. I'm wanting one radio that will do all including 11 meter but with a good audio. I've herd that the icoms dont sound very good on 11 meter and I want to keep this imaginary radio around the 500.00 range.

I was thinking of getting rid of my 2000 and 2510 along with the base amp and buying a 2995 base but I will still be running two radios at that point.

So... What do you all think?

I dont think you can cut it down to just ONE, radios are like patatoe chips...you can't have just one...

ICOM SOUND?????

An ICOM sounds the SAME on ANY band! Sounds like SOMEBODY does NOT like ICOM or does NOT want you too BUY or USE one to me! WHY would they NOT sound good on 11 meters PLEASE explain that one for me? If the ICOM has NOT had a MARS mod it will NOT sound good on 11 meters because it will NOT talk on 11 meters but with the mod it KICKS BUTT on 11 meters just like ALL of the other bands.Whomever said they don't is FULL of SH-T! :sneaky2:

When he speaks of 11m I am sure he means in AM mode, remember we are talking CB here. Almost all the modern HF radios, including Icoms, do not sound that great on AM. You can tweak the audio and make it better but in some cases "better" still isn't good enough.

six shooter I'm just going by what I've heard around. And yes were talking CB channels. I don't know this from experience.

T23 I know what your saying and I think I might just be sticking with two radios.

I've listened to a couple kenwoods before that were modded for 11 meter but those folks didn't use them for anything else as they wern't licensed. So I cant say if after the moding they still sounded good on 20 and 40 meters. Or maybe they would sound terrible. I just dont know. This is why I wanted some input on this to see if it can be done.

I'm going to start another thread on the rci2995 so if you know anything about them...

Something relatively small, an Icom IC-706MKIIG or IC-7000; something large, (sacrificing 440 MHz), then an IC-746Pro (as far as Icoms go.)

You can get halfway decent audio out of an IC-718 or 706MKIIG is you hook a D104 to the BACK (13 pin din) jack of the radio, and run no more than 10W output on AM.

As for the IC-746Pro on AM, you can do 'okay' with a Heil mic (full range or HC5 element) if you shut off the compressor and run no more than about 15-20W on AM.

I've never owned a Yaesu HF rig, just VHF, so I dunno. But, all the ones I've heard on HF AM sounded good to me.

Also, every Kenwood I've owned didn't have AM, so I dunno how they work. They were all SUPERB on SSB and CW.

Yaesu FT101 w/ FL2100B.

Best of both AM and SSB.

However, don't run it to it's limits. Don't TOUCH the damn circuitry on it. Don't run more than 150 milliamps of carrier on AM.

AM

I talk on 20 meter & 75 meter AM with my ICOM 756 PROII with a HEIL PR-20 & have used my ICOM 746 PRO as well & I get GREAT audio reports. The OLD GUYS think it's an OLDER rig & not modern gear. All I have to go on here & from others I have worked who also use ICOM gear.6 meter AM reports are the SAME on both of these rigs as well.

Legally, it's not too likely that you're going to get by with just one radio for both Part 95 and Part 97 services, at least in the USA. OTOH, your versatility is increased by having both services available on their own sets. If nothing else, you can be monitoring the CB while operating on the ham bands and vice versa.
