I found one of these locally the guy wants $40 for, sans the side speaker. In his words "receives numerous bands works good".

I'm interested in a cheap HF rig to get on the air and chat. But I noticed this one appears to not have FM as an optional mode...??

You think for $40 it would be worth my time? Or pass?

Thanks.

That is a very nice receiver, and for a Novice a good place to start.
But it's only a receiver.

It's well worth $40 as long as it's clean and receives well. But if you want to get on air there are better options.

You mention FM, what band are you interested to work FM on?

Brother, that was vintage gear when I got my Novice ticket in 1987! Add another $300 to your $40 and buy a rig you'll be able to use.

Thanks for the responses, guess I missed the part on it just being a receiver and not a transceiver.

I remember those being at Radio Shack way back in the day. For the $40 I would pick it up just to have as a receiver. They were not a bad receiver and IIRC the AX-190 received the amateur bands and the SX-190 received the international shortwave broadcast bands.
