ALS 600/606/1300/1306 amps W8JI

A friend of mine bought the ASL-600. He is an experienced operator and knows how to use an amplifier. This amp has been repaired three times at MFJ/Ameritron. First time the power supplied failed. The next two times the FETs failed. Fortunately covered under warranty.

Another friend had the ALS-1300. FETs cooked off in the 1st week. He is probably not the most careful operator but the amp should have protected itself from destruction.

Maybe if you run the Ameritron amps at half their advertised power they would be OK.

I have owned a Tokyo HyPower HL-1.5Kfx (1,000 watts) , and and Elecraft KPA-500 (500 watts). The heat sinks are massive in these amplifiers. They have great protection circuits. They cost a lot more than the comparable Ameritron.

I've gone back to a tube amplifier. I now have an Acom 2000a. It is an auto tune amp. Send a dit and it tunes itself. I run 1,500 watts during RTTY contests and the amp manages the heat with no problem. It will handle up to 3:1 SWR but having several hundred watts of reflected power freaks me out so my antennas are close to 50 ohms on all bands.

I have friends with the ACOM and SPE solid state amps. They are nice amps and are well built. Fans are very loud when running full power with high duty cycle modes.

I'm rambling, but save your money and buy a better amp than the ALS-600 and ASL-1300.
