I was on Ebay looking at radios again and I found a Uniden Washington marked New old stock. no mods was aligned and Tuned. I was home for the end of the auction and got the radio. Clean plastic on the front. Made several contacts on AM local and SSB skip and the Radio is a good talker and looks new . I have been wanting the radios I used in the early 80's so now I have the washington and the Cobra 148 Gtl both like new and workimg good. They seem better than the new radios of today but maby it's just Me.

The older radios sometimes way better than the new ones. I have a few old am/ssb radios that are solid performers that don't drift all over the place.

All I talk on is the old philly 148 and grant xl's. No bells and whistles. Just a good solid radio. I keep looking for more of these that haven't been butcher but hard to come by. I wish they made something nowadays similar to these. But I haven't seen anything. They don't do big watts. Maybe 12-15w pep. But they are clean and talk very well.

Man I went over board I guess. I will say the kenwood ts140 I got will move the needle even on am, can dead key 25 watts and swing to right at 100 watts. Someone modded it. I need to take the covers off and see what has been done. This was an eBay purchase as well. The rsdio works wonderfully on SSB and has been modded for all freqs. It will do almost 150 watts on ssb. And it doesn't sound bad either! Clean as a whistle. I haven't used it much since I got the icom 746 right around the same time, loaned it to a local friend who has been using it and it sounds good through my receive. Don't know how good the am sounds but it is a bit touchy on the rf power so I will have to wait til I get it back before I play with it anymore. My local friend sure is happy!!

I never owned a Grant but who knows what next year brings... I was looking at old posts on this website and it looks like the better Washington has the 5 pin mic like mine, I haven't opened it up yet to see what board or chip it has.

I have never owned a base station, but if I were to I would look for something like that Uniden. I love the old school look to it. I like how that blue light flows from the vents on the top.

Hopefully in the next year or so I can stop moving around and finally buy a house and then can actually put up an antenna and look around for an old base radio, but until then I'll have to stick to my magnum s45 in the truck. I have been thinking about getting an old cobra 148 and a small amp for my truck as well.
