More computer 'fun'!
I'm having problems with this stuff again. Seems it happens fairly regularly. Last time it was 'Nortons 360' (the 'Staples' edition). What'a pile of SH_ _! I'd advise gettting the regular version of that not 'Staple's.
Dumped Norton's completely, used another well recommended program, which was just dandy till just lately. Still does it's job well, but things sure get 'jerky'. I do a very huge amount of downloading so I guess I ought'a expect that, huh? Don't care, really aggravating!
I'm also not thrilled with all the 'automatic' up-dating, etc. ->I<- like/want to control that! One reason why I dumped Norton's.
So, anyone have any suggestions? And I already know several 'places' where I'd like to 'put' all of this, so don't bother making that one.

(Norton's hasn't been worth a hoot since Mr. Norton got out of the business!)

I use Avast and you can regulate the updating. I think most AV's allow this.
I would also dump your temporary file folder. That fills up and can slow down the computer. Also a Defrag once a month to put files all back together .

Sonwatcher,
Thanks, but that's one i can't use. I don't use 'IE' which is one requirement. If it wasn't for that I sure give it a shot!

I don't use IE either. Firefox 3.0.1 (latest version) . I have no problems at all. It has given warnings of websites and consistently scans all my downloads before allowing them to be opened. Just using Firefox .

Oh really! Just looked at their web site before that last post, and it said that 'IE' was a requirement. If it isn't, then I'll certainly try it.
One of the things that typically slows things down is the amount of storage you happen to have. Considering how I 'save' things, as in not wanting to throw anything away, sort of, I don't expect 'blazing speed' (more like 'Blazing Saddles'). But when things start getting 'jerky', that's it, something has to change. Got a feeling that change is going to have to be in how I save things. Also considering how I typically can't find stuff, that's probably not a bad idea... oh well.

AVG is free and works well, can't say it works better then that would leave my selection open to ridicule as it's just better and not perfect like norton, mcaffee or avast.

I have used Mcafee for the last two years as well as pccillan. All the computer nerds claim that Norton is the best hands down. Never used it though because Norton does not play well with AOL.

I would also look at Trend Micro

It has been the best of any AV I have tested and I have been thru about 5.
allowes you to use it on 3 computers and can be configured to do just about anything at any time. Works Great!

I'm like you Doc. I am ready to find something else as soon as my current version of Norton expires in about a month or so. It has been locking my computer up while doing updates etc. It is so bad sometimes I can't even get the task manager to open to see what is hogging all my resources. I eventually narrowed it down to Norton. Norton works great but it sure hogs computer power.

the only thing you have to watch out for if your on line with someone in a forum that is not protected they can knock out your NTRLD File out. making you to reload windows. i had it happen to me 3 times . very nasty son of a bitch . avast is one of the few companies that support million dollar mainframes . i trust my life with it peroid. a ham operator from oregon told me the real deal.
