Riverman, I think maybe your friend might have done just what you said and spun his beam around to horizontal, but it wasn't an original AstroBeam.

The original A/B construction will not allow spinning around the boom like some other beam antennas will do.
Edit: the supporting mast is inside the hoop of the A/P driven element and the boom is pinned in place inside the mounting hub.
