This has happened twice now just in my small town area.
The local municipal water utilities have electronic level recording systems on their water tanks. 2 or 3 times a day they transmit their data back to their headquarters for viewing and storage on a computer or whatever. The primary freq. is in VHF or UHF somewhere, I haven't gone by with a freq. counter yet but I have one and will do so later this week. The tanks have a small outbuilding at the bottom with a 4 element vertical yagi on top.
About a year ago the system on a tank across town developed this fault which I could hear from my house weakly, about 2 miles away. It was easy to track down and I reported it to the city owner and they got it fixed.
Now, 2 days ago the exact same unbearable noise started up again and it is strong, about a S9 signal. So it is likely coming from one of the two closer tanks. The spur appears on or about 27.120mhz in between CB channels 13 & 14 and wouldn't ya know our local group runs ch 14. So needless to say it is wiping me out. The system operates for exactly 30 minutes at a time everyday from 9:30~10:00am and again from 7:30~8:00pm. Also may run again during the night but don't know.
The spur presents a solid carrier, probably FM, with a constant high-pictched single tone whine.
So seeing as these are very unique and specific radio data transmitting systems, there probably isn't too many companies making them and there may be the same system installed all over the country.
So has anyone on here encountered the same spurious emission in your area? I tried google but didn't find anything but I may have been searching for the wrong key words to find an article.
I'll report back later this week with more. Wish me luck in getting the local city to get it fixed. The first one last year was a different little city.
