Might be a little early to tell but after trying out my new 6666 Pro this morning I am less than impressed with that little mic hole in the mic. I had to turn up my power level up to 14 which my meter says is 4 watts to make my meter swing to where it does with other radios. I did cut thru the clutter on 38 lsb to Texas and got a good report but can't help but wonder what another mic might do. Has anyone modded that little mic hole or found a better performing Mic ????

I had a little fun with my 6Pro mic.

What you did looks interesting but that type of work isn't my specialty. I would consider paying you to do it to my mic if I can't find another way around it. I did that drill the hole mod in 3 of my President mics and it sounded so good a guy in Texas wanted me to do his, but I sent him pictures on how to do it. I wonder if anybody has tried that with the Anytone mic. Or a possible replacement mic from a different manufacturer.

If you're using this radio as a base, I would suggest using a desk mic.

I use this one I bought from WE2NY. It's an electret element like the stock and I added and wired the up/down and programmable buttons on it.

Just on the talkback alone there us a very significant difference in improved audio quality.

These mics are inexpensive and easy to wire but adding the buttons is a bit more involved.

Don't know how you can beat this mic for $50. I always get great audio reports and matches up well with any rig that likes electret.

Works well, thanks

My pleasure, glad you like it.

For anyone else that might be interested:

Bob has other good stuff also. I bought a electret replacement cartridge kit for an Astatic Silver Eagle that was simple to install and works well. He has them for standard D104/TUG8 mics also. Helps a D104 match up better with modern rigs.

All those desk mics are nice but I figured the 6666 Pro was my last major radio purchase as I look at all the radio stuff I have acquired. I have a Turner Super Sidekick mic, a Astatic AST878DM Amplified mic, several Astatic red Road Devil mics. Plus a bunch of other hand mics. Thinking maybe I need to mod the stock mic or just put up with it the way it is because the Well is Running Dry. LOL

What makes you think this is related to the tiny hole in the mic body? This is not the 1960's where radio's ship keying 2.5 watts at 60% modulation.

What does having to turn the radio up to 14 to get to 4 watts with forward swing have to do with anything? What is next if your guitar amp dial goes up to 11 or 12 instead of 10 does that make it weaker or more power than one that stops at 10?

If your modulation is a ratio dependant on hole size than a larger hole will fix everything!

Just slap a D104 on it that will solve everything!

The AT-6666 and Pro are not a Cobra 148 or a Galaxy or a Stryker 955. Nuance is a thing. Nothing your other non-AT-6666 Pro radio's do behavior wise has anything to do with how that specific radio behaves.

Have you read the owners manual yet? Have you adjusted the mic gain? Have you made sure that the mic selected matches the mic installed? I am assuming you can select dynamic or electret but that is assumption on my part.

Have you seen the tiny mic hole in every cellphone made in the last 10 years?

If the AT-6666 Pro is largely an upgraded version of the AT-6666 people have been modifing them for over 10 years but last I checked no one has shared any of the audio mods on this forum but I am not a reglar here.

I went and looked and as far as I could tell this is either a totaly different PCB or heavily modified. That said I am sure it has similar layout seldom do companies toss the baby out with the bath water. So if you can get anyone that has modified the tx audio chain to post the mod for the older unit I am sure it would help with the new unit. Almost all of this companies radio's and the ones they make for other companies branded for them share a lot of DNA.

The problem is not the mic it is the audio chain meaning something probably a bumch of capacitors values need to be altered maybe a filter or resistor as well. They are all surface mount. All of the people that sell these "modified" for hundreds more than you can buy a stock one for have no interst in telling you how to reduce their ability to eat!

Even in the old days the real magic was not slapping a power mic on the radio and cutting a limiter and cranking up the modulation.

I would imagine that if the modification like old school "Gold FInger Mod" exists for this radio or the older version it is not on this site. It is probably on a CB/Amp Builder site behind a pay wall!

I would start with this though and see if you can figure it out if they are similar or not?

the Well is Running Dry.

I have two Anytone radios, a 5555N2 and a 6666. I've tried several mics on both, and both radios sound the best on the unmodified stock mic.

These radios use electret mics, which as stated in the post above this, are an entirely different animal than your old fashioned dynamic mic!

Just read the manual, hook up the radio to a good power supply and a decent antenna at least 36 feet in the air, and have fun! I've talked all over North America on the barefoot 6666 in my SUV and that's with just a three foot firestick on the front left fender.

One other bit of advice..... that 6666 is a fabulous freeband radio. Buying a radio like that and then staying on the regular 40 is pretty much like buying a sports car and never leaving your driveway. Lots and lots of frequencies to explore!

Like I said it might be too early to tell ! Because I haven't had enough time to spend with it because I have a dieing 93 year old mother I've been running to the hospital to deal with. Family 1st Radio 2nd. And there are other issues in life to deal with also including my own health. I ask observation advice from other more experienced operators in here who have owned this radio longer. Thank you !

We all have excuses myself included. I did you a hint or trail of crumbs.

I am busy too. Trust me I could go on and on about my rotator cuff, bicep, need for double knee replacment, diabetes, chronic insomnia, dad's cancer, mom's heart surgery, 2 of my 3 sons not being able to find work fresh out of college and moving back home and on and on!

Ask the right question and use a little bit of google.

Sometimes you need to pick the right forum on the right sight to find your answer!

I spent 5 minutes looking for you in between watching some anime waiting for my food to heat up in the oven and my wine to chill in the fridge!

Everyone wants to hit the easy button but life is not easy at all. Your not looking at a Cobra 148GTL and this is not the 1990's where it is all been done before and written about in a magazine or mini-book you can purchase.

Sorry your mom is ill must be nice to have her around in her 90's I doubt I will get that much time with my partents that in thei 70's! Cherish every minute!

Again start here not the same but might be close enough to get you started. https://www.wwpdx.com/ForumWWPDX/viewtopic.php?

All this common sense advice is useless because we all know the only thing in radio that really matters is how much that needle swings.......

LOL That is the reason I bought the 6666 Pro because of the freeband possibilities out of the box. I'll get there but as of now I've only had about 30-45 minutes setting at the radio and I tend to be cautious in the beginning so I don't create more problems for myself by Bulling in. I don't come from the world of electronics but I come from the world of maintenance and have had to fix a lot of things that the Bull in the China Closet created. I find it cheaper to do it right the first time. But that's just my style. Thanks for the advice. I look forward to Getting Up To Speed ! LOL
