If you're using this radio as a base, I would suggest using a desk mic.

I use this one I bought from WE2NY. It's an electret element like the stock and I added and wired the up/down and programmable buttons on it.

Just on the talkback alone there us a very significant difference in improved audio quality.

These mics are inexpensive and easy to wire but adding the buttons is a bit more involved.
