I have one more idea.

I have a short wave antenna. I attached it to the HT antenna on my VX-8R to listen to shortwave transmissions. When I flipped over to APRS I noticed that I picked up more APRS traffic. I am not brave (knowledgeable enough) to try transmitting. You could try this to see if the message is just out of reach.
