You're smart not to do that transmitting till you have some reasonable idea of what the SWR is on that antenna at 2 meters.
The only thing I'd add to your recommendation is to do that listening with a scanner, or disable the radio's ability to 'ack' message delivery (-transmitting- an acknowledgment). I got a feeling that would just be adding another stage of problems, so just think about it.

PS - If you use that 'Wide 2-2', you don't need the 'Wide 1-1', redundant. Then again, it won't hurt, so leave it alone.
