Very nice job on this whole presentation. I had the same concerns, the only reason for the pipe was to allow the vert./horz. thing with just a 1/4 twist on the same mast. In the 4 yrs. iv'e had it it's been fine even when left out during snow storms at camp, which is where it see's most of it's use. They are both very good American made products and will serve us well.
