Does anyone know how to calbrate this meter? I use the 1 that is built in to my UNIDER WASHINGTON for MODULATION and i get 100 percent. Then i put this one inline and it says 80 percent. Like i said before i got the rig from someoneon this site. When i was at his home he put it on his meter and we got a little over 100 percent. NEED SOME HELP GUYS AGAIN..73s. RAY.

id trust an external meter more so than an internal one in the radio.

i assume you "set" the modulation meter with the knob and the "set/mod" switch ?

changing the mic gain and or the variable power is gonna effect the modulation reading also.

UNIDEN WASHINGTON

Got the MIKE GAIN wide open. The RIG has no V.P.When i got the RIG it was still in the box.The guy i got it from is from this site and his work is some of the best ive seen.Like i said he had it on his meters and it over 100 percent the meter on the RIG SHOWS 100 percent. Its the ASTATIC 600 I GET ABOUT 75 TO 80 percent.Dont know what meter to trust.:confused1: 73s. Well it sounds like its a 2 to 1 battle and the PDC meter is the oddball. Now unless someone readjusted the setting or VR adjustment in the radio it would seem the PDC meter is off. The only thing that concerns me is those older PDC meters were actually of the better meters that were sold to the 11 meter users.

What was the meter that ths other fella used to measure the modulation, power ETC.?? If it were actually at 80% that would be a little cleaner audio than a reading of over 100% Was the the radio setup on a scope? that is the best way to do it Ray and then you know forsure what your looking at.

There are VR adjustments in the PDC and meters of this type to calibrate them but if you are not 100% sure what the radios doing then you would actually be shooting yourself in the foot so to speak by readjusting the calibration of that meter.

You can adjust the meter to tell you or show you exactly what (you) want it to read but a person can just tell themselves its doing these readings and make life alot easier. You can look inside the meter and some ofe the VR's are actually labeled or marked to whatever specific adjustment you are after.

I would trust the 600 before I would trust the meter in the radio. External meters sets are usually fairly close, and radio meters often need to be aligned.

Sooo . . . Having said that, don't mess with the inside of the Astatic 600 meter!

If your radio is showing less than 100% modulation thru the external meter; then it probably is.

After a radio has been in service for 5-6 years; they often benefit from a complete alignment. This is due to the fact that part values in the radio will change - most often the electrolytic capacitors get weaker.

Last time I aligned a Washington for a local operator, it was fairly well out of alignment. Tuned up real nice - though.

The RIG that i goy came right out of the box.Now the guy that did the work is GOOD. HE IS ONE OF THE best THAT IVE SEEN.Yes it was on a scope,T and P. CLARIFIED OPENED.I get real good reports on it. Might be one of the best rigs i ever had. Some times i hook the FAT KID up and make and shut down the whole town.THE FAT KID DOES 180WATTS TO 240 WATTS. Ilive about 20 miles from 81. north and south hit them with no shoes on.I can get 80 east and west to..OK.GUYS ILL JUST LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS;).Thanks for the INFO. 73s.RAY:thumbup::D

OK . . . Then try that meter through another radio.

It is also possible that the radio tech that worked on your radio didn't turn the modulation up too high - or less than 100%. No one says that you MUST have it set for 100%. They often need the mic you use to make this adjustment final. Especially if you want real clear modulation and need the output of the radio to match the input of a linear amp. Hard to say.

It is possible that the meter is off; but not likely. These meters are usually far more accurate than most of the CB meters on the market, including Dosy stuff.

Maybe your meter is different than the one your tech used when he showed the 100% modulation, take your Astatic meter over to your tech to compare both meters, yours might need a little tweaking or calibration to show the same readings as the one your tech used, once in a while some brand spankin new meters need a little tweak to be more accurate or sometimes you get a bad apple

Best meter for modulation is a Scope

THANKS GUYs.I said it before, and ill say it again. There are some VERY and i mean VERY GOOD GUYs on this site.:D:pop:73s.RAY.

Audio check using Dosy audio monitoring function

The final check is always with the on-air audio. The Dosy 4001 and 4002 P versions have an audio monitoring function that will allow you to hear the quality of the audio peaks. You can calibrate your meter according to the audio quality. Quite simply, where the audio breaks is where you've exceeded 100% modulation. Quite frankly so many radios out there are over 100% modulated that a rig that stays below 100% on peaks is a quiet rig in most situations unless you are using a compressor audio circuit.

METER

All said and done,I think ill put the meter up FOR SALE.I HAVE EVERYTHING WITH IT. ANY TAKERS IAM LOOKING FOR A HAND HELD 2 METER.ANY TAKERS LET ME KNOW.ASAP.73.RAY.;)

BTW, the calibration pots are labled on the board in the Astatic 600

BTW, the calibration pots are labled on the board in the Astatic 600. On one board are pots for each calibration power setting 4x. On the other board is the modulation adjustment, I presume as it is not marked. This meter is cumbersome to repair if a component connector or potentiometer requires replacement as the its assembled elaborately and requires quite a few steps to get to many parts. the calibration points, however, are easily accessible. For ease of reading, accuracy, and ease of maintainance, I prefer the Dosy professional archtecture meters.
