Check out Ham Radio Outlet. www.hamradio.com

There are sooo many options when getting started. Your best bet would probably be to get a dual band HT ("handi talkie" hand held radio). A 2m/70cm radio will give you the most "bang for the buck" in many cases. If you want more power at a later time you can always add a dual band amp and throw it in the mobile. Just be sure and get one that will put out at least a full 5 watts with 12v input. It's pretty hard to go wrong with uhf/vhf radios out there now days. It's just a matter of finding the features you really want and the right price.

When I was shopping for my first one I found the ADI AT-600 to be the best value. Unfortunatly they don't make them anymore but I believe the manufacturer still sells refurbs on their site.

You might want to check for a used radio from a local ham or goto www.qrz.com and check their classifieds for a cheap radio.

Icom T7A Dual band ht ($199.99), a Yaesu VX-5R triband ht ($279.95), or an Icom IC-T81A ($279.95) are pretty good choices. The prices listed are at Ham Radio Outlet. They offer free shipping and handling on most orders over $100.

Or I can sell you my AT-600 and I'll go get me a ICT81A. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)">
