Hi all,

I am soon to be in the market for a new ball mount for a full size CB whip, or whatever the hell else i decide to screw on there, and am looking for some advice from those who have been down this road a time or two.

I have always been a fan of the Hustler ball mounts, but i have been reading some really terrible reviews of their current product line up.

so, has Hustler bitten the dust as far as quality goes?

which 2" ball mounts are the sturdiest these days?

i am aware of some of the "boutique" antenna mount suppliers such as Breedlove, and am willing to go that route, but i would like to know if there is maybe a commercial supplier that still makes a good one.

Whatever mount i choose, it has to be VERY sturdy, and CANNOT fall horizontally like the cheap-o ones do.

I picked up a Hustler last year which was doing good until I changed mounting systems. Used it with 102" and hamsticks. I would say it's good for the price.

antenna specialist made a good one back in the day,, see one every once and a while on ebay nib,,,, back in the early 70s mastermobile was the one to get but i havent seen one in years and years,,,,most of the modern ones are junk the way i see it,, i had a hustler c32 ball mount and it wouldnt stay tight on the phelonic plate and the ball threads stripped,, looked back and my whip was was bouncing around and sure enough it was stripped,, i just replaced it ,,, i have came across a antenna specialist nib and will be putting it on when i get a chance,,, am hoping i will get the same results with it as i have has with the c32

I checked Breedlove's site, and he is obviously a very talented machinist.

great products over there, but i couldn't find any real details on the ball mounts, just a picture and short description.

If i'm going to pay 50 dollars or more for a CB antenna mount, i would like to see exactly what about it is going to make sure that the antenna stays vertical.

I'm not saying i doubt him, or anyone who bought one of these; it's just that i HAVE to see these things for myself. it's just the way i am. :)

If anyone has one of these mounts and can post a couple of pics that show it's superiority, that would be awesome. or maybe just a description of how his mount is different.

I gotta admit that it's going to be hard for me to pay 50 dollars for a mount that will be holding a 20 dollar antenna connected to a restored yard sale radio.

thanks for the tip on the antenna specialists and mastermobile mounts.
I will start looking around for some old ones in good shape.

thanks to all for the input, it is appreciated.

ok, i finally found what i was looking for on Breedlove's site. the reason i was confused is that i didn't look under "backing plates". i just clicked on "ball mounts", and didn't see the backing plates.

looks like this is the way to go for sure. the two delrin pins are the key to it's stability, and you don't have to over tighten the big 1/2 inch bolt to keep it vertical.

brilliant design, but it looks like i was dreaming when i thought it was going to be 50 bucks.

it's going to be about a hundred dollars with shipping, and im just not going to spend that on a CB antenna mount.

If this was the top of the sunspot cycle, i might consider it, but for now, this dream is dead.

don't get me wrong, the mount is totally worth the money. I am a metal fabricator myself and i know how much work goes into something like this; i just cant justify the expense right now.

thanks for all the input!

I have a Breedlove mount but not the ball one, I use his NMO one. When I get the new car I will be getting his ball mount for the screwdriver no questions asked.
W9,
Which one?? I'm looking to drilling the hole for a nmo mount but am having problems finding a good mount.
To the OP, sorry for thread drift.

thanks guys.

W9CLL, yeah, i guess i did LOL.

To all, please feel free to let this thread drift where it wants to. I got the info i needed, and will be on the lookout for some NOS ball mounts. That is unless i get a big radio job in here that justifies the cost of the Breedlove mount. In that case i will probably spring for it.

again, great info here. thanks.
