I have a Blackcat 150A/rb amp this amp uses a keying tube the problem is that I have to turn the dead key down on my Galaxy Melaka to 1 1/2 watt so I can get a 3 1/2 watt deadkey on my Blackcat amp if I turn up deadkey on radio up I cannot turn down Blackcat deadkey enough. The adjustment scew is all the way in on back also. Is there a resistor or something I can add to amp so I can have a 3 watt deadkey on radio and 3 watt on Blackcat amp and maybe have more adjustment ? Blackcat deadkey is adjusted on back of amp by a screw in coil arrangement which I donot know what it is also. I hope you can help me Thank you all for all your help on this forum. Jimbo165

Try backing the screw out on the JB. This adjusts a coil on the input side of the amp. Coupling and power output increase as the slug is moved inside the coil and reduced as it's backed out. Also watch the inside of the 8417 tube because just about every one applies almost 400 volts on the screen grid and that just kills the tube with the combined plate voltage and drive. They often start turning the screen grid inside the tube bright red as you modulate. Some only have 2 poles on the relay and that forces the tube to stay on in receive too. Some will turn the plate red when you're not even keyed and ruin the tube.

Blackcat deadkey

Shockwave if you turn out that screw it will raise deadkey of amp you can turn it out and raise it to 20watt deadkey swinging 125w but that will not help my problem. If deadkey of radio is turned up also it raises Blackcat deadkey at same time. I have radio set at a 1 1/2watt deadkey just so I can get Blackcat to deadkey at 3 to 3 1/2 watts and that is with screw turned all the way in cannot turn out screw as it will take deadkey up more than 4 watt min I want. I was wondering if there was a resistor change that I could add or subtract to help me have more in adjustment of Blackcat would like to have radio at a 3 to 3 1/2 watt deadkey and blackcat same. Thanks for comments. Jimbo165

That is not how this coil was designed to work and may indicate it was damaged. Is the coil winding still positioned on the end of the coil form? Sometimes this coil moves forward on the form and prevents you from being able to tune the inside in a position outside of the coil. The key here is that power is reduced when the slug inside the coil form is positioned outside or away from the coil windings. If the coil wires break their glue bond on this form, they can move forward and prevent you from finding a position where the slug is far enough away to reduce power. The fact turning the slug inwards reduces power is a strong indication the coil position on the form has been disturbed.

Blackcat Deadkey

Shockwave I really looked at this adjustment coil and it does not look like it has been altered in any way windings donot look like they have moved this Blackcat works perfect it is I would like to find a way to get more movement or change in this adjustment coil as far as lowering the deadkey of this amp. There is resisters soldered to this coil if I change values would it make any difference? Thanks Shockwave you have been alot of help for sure in alot of my questions here on this forum. Thanks Jimbo165
