He got off lightly. Many farmers have been paralysed because they hooked a safety chain between the drawbar of their trailer and the top link of their tractor, what they don't realise is that when the trailer unhooks, the tractor accelerates without the load and catapults the trailer drawbar up through the back of the cab. Chains can only be attached at or below the level of the axle.
It appears the tree was trying to beat some sense into him. I guess it failed.
One day years ago,my grandpa was out cultivating one of his fields and couldn't get his Massey-Ferguson tractor to stop at the end of a row. He took quick action and quickly lowered his tillage tool at the tractor's rear in order to slow his descent over a 25 foot downhill embankment. Long story short,his tillage tool dug in and brought the tractor to a fairly quick halt. He sustained a few dinged up ribs from his chest hitting the steering wheel as opposed to the possibility of worse injuries or even death had he gone completely over the bank to the roadway below.
