Hey Rob it is the same radio I run every day. In fact the same radio I have talked to you on many times on SSB......I was using my Ranger 6900-F25, texas star 500 at appox 300 watts and the antenna is a francis 9 foot "triple quarter wave".
I can work work 10 through 12 meters with no tuner....as long as the SWR is below 2.5 to one I do not worry about it.
Running the amp at that low level allows it to be much more forgiving to SWR mismatch.... it will sit there and work into a 2 to 1 match all day.
He had a pile up going this morning...... I was very happy with the contact out of the mobile.
10 and 12 meters are great bands to work mobile on and propagation has been really coming alive the last few weeks.

nice grab to bulgaria

northern england and germany were coming in this am on 11 meters.

that's an 8 foot francis? right?

10 and 12 meter are fantastic for long range propagation. If you should ever blow a trans in the TS just make sure you get low beta matched set's. Low beta put out less power but they are much more fogiving. Also I always removed 2290's if one goes bad in an amp and I always replace them all with 2SC2879's because again they are much more tolerant of higher SWR's. I always favor either durability or sound quality first power is always at the bottom of the list when selecting parts.

If someone is using a mobil rig in a base station I normally used to go with High Beta replacements because they had a better antenna, matching network etc.......

My ultimate ever was routinely talking to Western and Eastern Europe from a stock 2950 in Georgia in the 1990's when we had a killer sun spot cycle going on. 102inch stainless steel whip. I can still recall talking about Fish as in pet's with a guy in London. Most locals though that had base antena's where not impressed with conditions since the noise level was insane. It was Spanish speakers from Mexico, South America and Cuba in the day time and Western and Eastern Europe after sunset! LOL

Yes...typo 96 inch fiberglass whip.....they are almost impossable to find any more.
I had two shipped fron VA when they stopped making them.....shipping was more than the antennas lol

i keep looking for them at estate sales and auctions but so far no luck, just 102" steel whips.

2879's are very durable as long as you do not volt them. That all changes when you start running them at 20/21 volts and driving the snot out of them.
Ten meters has always been my fav band you can get on the air and do well with a very modest station.

If any of you are running around with a ten or 10/12 meter mobile I encourage you to get on the bands and call....... both bands were wide open again this morning..
If you have the abilty to listen to the cb band do a quick check on 27.385 LSB. If the radio is full of signals there you can almost bet that 10 and 12 have the same conditions.....
Don't assume that because you do not hear anything that the band is closed.
Find a frequency and call CQ you might be shocked to find that it is wide open, sometimes all it needs is someone to get it going.

Amazing, 10,12,15,17 have been really nice here in the middle of the Indiana.
Just worked T32C on 21.285/275. I know for you guys on the west coast, that's a day walk, but for me in the middle with just a vertical and 85w, I was thrilled.

xmas island from the midwest, nice.

finally got my two pill back in the mobile to try working pacific dx and it's starting to slow down a bit:mad:

I'll see what i can hit at lunch. good day.

I remember my first Bulgaria: LZ2JF, Nick. We've exchanged several little mementos over the past 30 years or so. He's in Veliko Tirnovo, which is one of the biggest producers of roses (yeah, the flower!) in the world, and the source of lots of cosmetic stuff. One of his packages had a little glass vial of rose perfume. Very tightly sealed but still, the aroma leaks out just enough to be noticeable. My wife really likes it, and has it up on a shadowbox her brother gave us for an anniversary gift.

You learn a lot about people and places with amateur radio!
