The name calling and cussing in this part of the forum needs to stop. Thank you to those who got the thread back on topic.

There's not a thing wrong with someone commenting on their opinion of a product. People need to remember to not take it as a personal insult if someone doesn't like something about their product (that applies to everyone).

A comment on the Coily quality issue: I recall several other forum members reporting quality issues on these antennas over the years. This isn't the first time it's been discussed....

A metal ball that looks like a gumball on top of an antenna is called a corona ball. It's there to keep the static build up down as your driving. I have one on my HF antenna, but it's not so big that it makes the whip wave all over the place.

MRCOILY, you don't have to run a davemade or Predator 10K to be welcome on this forum. I don't run either. (I have used a Predator in the past) Other people on the forum have used your antennas and had good success with them. Eduk8tr has run one for years. Other people, however have had problems with them. People are free to give their opinions on different products and their experience with the vendor's support.

Some products are better than other products and that's called competition. The sad truth is that some vendors understand customer service and some don't. Take Jay, for example: His antennas are priced higher than most other verticals. He puts out the highest quality he knows how at his price point, offers a no excuses return (in original box) policy, and helps everyone he can get the thing running like it should. How many people do you see posting negative comments about his business? His antennas just keep selling.

If someone had a problem with one of my products, I'd try everything I could to make it right instead of make excuses. And I certainly wouldn't start blaming a stupid internet forum.

"50 ohm corona ball"

What if I put it on an antenna that doesn't have 50 ohm impedance?

And how do you cut coax to 50ohms impedance? The characteristic impedance of coax is what it is, regardless of it's length. Not trying to put anyone down, just trying to help everyone understand....

Trimming the coax isn't changing the impedance. Don't be fooled by what that meter is reporting. To change the impedance, you would have to change either the resistance or the reactance of the coax. Trimming it is changing neither.

Freecell: on the coax thing, I don't disagree with you, but you're talking about when there's a load attached to the coax and what the whole system's impedance looks like at the transmitter. What MRCoily isn't understanding is that unless he is mangling the coax when he cuts it, the capacative reactance of the coax isn't changing, and the resistance certainly isn't changing. So that means the impedance of the coax is not changing. Since he's not doing these analyzer tests with a load attached to the coax, the only thing the analyzer is reading is the coax. Doing that test that way is pretty much a waste of time.

Hey CCM I kinda thought that was funny also... Last time I had checked 55 and Terry was one of the same... Speaking of 55 antennas, I have one for sale if anyone wants it... I got it for someone but now they can't buy it... Brand new never be keyed...

***EDIT*** Last time I checked Storm antennas are no more... Just like their boxes... Gone, Gone, Gone...

I was looking at the picture, it looks to me that it is the base of a ground-plane antenna, with the ground radials removed. If you really look at it the coil has a movable tap to adjust the feed-point, I do not think all that is there just holding the coil in place........

Interesting Picture.

I agree, it is a nice looking weld, I have to run a TIG machine at work from time to time, and Alum is harder to weld than most material.

As for the Hex on the shaft, I see nothing wrong with it. looks fine to me.

.I look at it this way, if Coliy makes his antenna look like everyone else's antenna....well I guess you know were I am going with that.

In essence all of the big coil antennas look kind of like all of the other big coil antennas, there is really no "magic" antenna, the basic principals of antenna technology are what they are.

I think building them different is what set`s them apart from each other. I will say this, at least Dan is working to improve his antennas, and has said that in the past his antennas had room for improvment, I see this as a positive step for a builder of any product.

2 cents worth.

so are you saying you didnt steal the design for your groundplane antenna or even say atleast borrowed it to improve it???????or are you gonna aviod that FACT altogether....no way in H*ll you design that without seeing the tornado......

did you think you could post that pic without atleast one person noticing the similaritys between the two????

me no like dishonest peeps yo,not impressed...........
