I used one for years and did well both on dx and locally. And it was absolutely not mounted properly. Mine was in a pecan tree about 25 feet in the air. With branches all around it.

IMO, if you hear folks on your CB, your are very likely hearing an A99 working.
Can't say I have ever heard a A99 very loud locally but a friend had a starduster that flat Screamed locally but was on a 80ft tower
I can make no claims about how loud the A99 is, it varies with the conditions according to some guy over on Mauldroppers.
I do like my Starduster.
I used to talk to some guys on AM about 15 miles from my old station. On SSB, it was easy to do 25 miles barefoot (base to base). I usually ran 100 watts, which allowed me to work guys that were about 65 miles down the road. Yes, there are better antennas out there. But for what it is, the Antron works pretty good.How far locally?
