We are considering re-opening the capacity hat thread.

The problem is, it is easy to make fun of someone's post with condescending comments or pictures which is of no use.

This has become a very informative thread.

If it is open, it will be cleaned.

The rest is up to all of you?

I voted no because of the way it has also gone south.

I have been a participant, and found the thread contained valuable/useful information. However, it has also been filled with worthless insults in the same manner that several other antenna threads on the forum have been. The irony is that many of the insults have been hurled by those others of us have looked to for the most reliable information. It has been like eating dinner from a dumpster.

I have no objection to reopening the thread if it is cleaned up, and the contributors learn the simple lessons our parents taught us growing up - show respect, and an argument is much stronger when supported by the facts and free of insults. I would enjoy a continuing and decent discussion.

I have had to come out of my shell a little and risk inflaming attitudes on several threads just to get someone to give me answers of any substance, and have risked being mocked to do so. I greatly appreciate the management team on the forum for allowing such freedom to pursue these subjects, but applying the rules of decency and respect are past due.

Thank you, Admins and Mods for coming to the rescue.

Respectfully,
Homer

Hello group

I have not participated in that thread nor have I even read it but I can imagine what it's like by HH's description.

I remain puzzled and frustrated however by HH's observations and proposal.

Being respectful and not attacking fellow members is already covered in the rules.

So why not just enforce the rules all along and as violations occur instead of letting a thread get out of hand and then locking it down? This makes no sense to me. Smaller messes are easier to clean up then bigger messes.

If you guys are shorthanded and don't have enough bodies to be around and enforce the rules then maybe y'all should solicit for some additional moderators. I'm sure there are a good handful of level headed and knowledgeable troopers here who have time to help out.

At any rate I "vote" for enforcing the rules all along instead of letting something get out of whack and having to perform some big repair job later.

Heck....even Barny Fife knows how to "Nip it in the bud." :D

I voted no.....yes I did read the thread and found the largest part of the posts educational except a handfull of posts from certain people (a certain person) that was simply saying everyone else but him was wrong and could/would not prove his side when asked to do so

If it wasnt for that person or two I would have voted to reopen the thread

just my 2 cents

WW,

You bring good points,

My thoughts were though,

If someone puts in a post, You are crazy.

Is that a violation? Depends on the interpretation right?

If it does not bother anyone and we "enforce" on that then we may be considered to stern.

If it does bother people and we do not "enforce" we may be considered to lenient.

A poll like this gives the forum members a chance to decide, sorta like a gauge for moderators.

Should it be cleaned? Should it be re-opened?

Votes and comments here help us understand how the members "feel"

The cap hat thread just happen to be the thread we use for that gauge.

Two examples,

1. This forum does not use the word filter for "swear words", why? Because it is not an issue. If it becomes one, we ask the members.

2. swap shop, we have received more feedback in support of the no reply policy, so it has stayed that way, that may not be true on another forum though.

We are "learning" our audience.

I voted no and would like to express my concern over the increase in disrespect occurring lately.

I am fairly new and came here because the discussions were very educational without beating or bashing people for their comments or questions regardless of how many times the question has been asked and answered.

Politely answering the question and referring them to search for the answer used to be a simple solution.

Newbies are instead being referred to as "new meat" and are turned off and never return.

There are alot of people in this forum with alot of knowledge but lacking in communications skills.

I like this forum and would like to see it remain as my number one place for finding radio related information.

As to the thread it should be cleaned up so that when others visit as guests they don't think this is another bad cb radio place.

Thanks for the opportunity to voice our opinions on this thread and etc.

HVNJ should live up to his name and hook himself to the nearest neon sign xfmr.

Hello HH, thanks for responding.

Your "you are crazy" example was pretty soft.

Many times it has been much worse than that and nothing was done.

I have had "FU" said to me here and nothing was done.

First, I'd like to thank the participants in these "lively" antenna debates. The number of people learning from these threads, even though they may remain silent, is no doubt quite large. And for the most part, these debates avoid the personal attacks and silly shit common on other loosely moderated forums, which is to be commended. But sometimes it seems like the informed enjoy bullying the uninformed just a little too much. Debunk the bullshit and move on. Trolls and people making false claims only have as much power to disrupt as the people responding give to them. Stop feeding the trolls and they go away. So to that degree, the contributors are just as much to blame as the instigators IMO, and sometimes I think "man, don't stoop to that level".

Having said that, I'd hate to see this forum become heavy handed. Heavily moderated forums tend to wither and die regardless of the topic, and I've been apart of many forums over the years covering many topics. I think for the most part, this forum strikes a nice balance between expression and moderation, and we shouldn't let a select few tear it all down by giving them the power to do so. I don't think they should be censored, I think they should be ignored. If the contributors can't do that, than I think some degree of moderation would be the only recourse with probably less than stellar results.

I've found that when disagreeing parties are given food for thought, they may come around and find common ground. But the harder each of them push, the wider the chasm typically becomes. When a wild claim gets no attention, the claimant has to rethink his position even though he may not acknowledge it.

So now that I've said a whole lot of nothing, I think it's still a worthwhile topic, but sometimes threads just get washed out and become too polluted to be resourceful.

I haven't seen any "heavy handedness" yet, but I don't read all the threads/posts either. I think the thread was closed for good cause, so, why not leave it that way? If someone want's to start another thread about the same topic, well and good. If not, that's well and good too.

Honestly, I think that in the case of the capacitance hat thread the fact that an obvious troll was called out is absolutely fine. There is nothing wrong with self-policing IMO, and if a person is posting false information as fact they should be confronted (tactfully) and their bad info debunked. Will they take offense? Very likely. Does it really matter? No, not in my opinion as long as factual information is being posted and the false info is being proven wrong.

Sure it's rough when people start cussing and calling each other names, so that kind of stuff should be avoided. Sometimes, though, it's the hard lessons that we remember, so sugar-coating things isn't always the best option in all cases either.

its obvious that HV just showed up to yank a few ropes and stir up a lil crap . hes one of many folks that have been on this forum that have had their hind parts handed to them for insisting their BS was true and seem to come back later and try to trash up productive post . if every post that gets off topic with flamming or or heated tempers because someone didnt see the light the other was shinning gets closed , i think it will just incite those folks to trash more threads .

and i apologize not for not having the tact and temperment others have here .

Re-open it.

Spank the bad and rude children.

Danish the trolls back under the bridge.

Let those that want to learn be able to do so.

I was enjoying the thread very much and found most of the discussion to be very informative.
