I drive a Honda Ridgeline w/Larsen magnet mount HF antenna on the roof and have used both a Cobra 25NWSTWX or a Uniden PC68XL CB. In addition I use a TomTom One XL GPS.

The CB is connected directly to the battery for power. The GPS is connected to a cig lighter outlet.

My problem is when the GPS power plug is inserted (GPS on or off), I lose virtually all my receive signal.

Thoughts?

i think its because even when its off, your GPS is actually still on.
it is still sending, receiving, and storing location information.

probably so emergency crews can still find you if the unit was powered off for whatever reason.

or maybe so big brother can keep an eye on where you go from day to day. LOL
hmmmm...

I think you have problem with your GPS charger. It is low cost inverter producing a lot of EMI.
In my country it is very common problem, best way is to build mobile charger by yourself. Basic application of 7805 voltage regulator is doing great job and free from EMI.

That is the correct answer, I'm 99.9% sure. I had a cellphone charger that did the same thing to my FM broadcast radio. as well as tear up the HF bands.:headbang:cursing: It would do it when plugged in and not connected to the phone at all.

Hey,
I have a laptop in my car with a gps mag mount sensor on the roof.. Mine acts up sometimes even with a barefoot radio. I notice the problem went away when I upgraded my coax.. Think they both utilize the vehile ground plane. Thats gotta be the charger.. try putting an extension on it and moving the charger to a different location
