Check SWR on SSB only radio?

Very basically, you have to have a constant tone input to take the place of a 'carrier'/'dead-key'. Doesn't much matter how you do it, but it has to be done that way (as Happy_Hamer said with his example).
And because it's a constant tone, it won't make any difference if you measure -power- in AVG or Pep, it will be the same. If it isn't then your meter is bad. Howz that for an interesting thingy??

Yeah, I realize that now, when I had my SWR meter inline with my radio and tried to check the SWR on SSB I thought I had burnt up the SWR meter because I thought I had put too much wattage through it since the SWR meter was for C.B use, but it worked fine on my mobile C.B with a 60 watt amp in line with the SWR meter after the amp instead of before it after that so that wasn't the case, so I guess now I will have to check it on CW.

Anyone know how to tell how much wattage an SWR meter will handle?

I have an Astatic PDC7

An Archer SWR meter from early 70's late 60's?

A Micronta/Radio Shack SWR meter form the 70's.

One way of telling the power rating is if the thing is also a watt meter (most are), the usual limit is the max power rating on the watt meter scale.

Ahh, I see, I didn't see that, I don't see to well..heh..heh... Most of the time I just pull the SWR meter out when I need to check the SWR and thats it.

Question: I have a variable power on my radio, does the power setting have any affect on the SWR?

My radio has a 5 watt and a 25 or 35 watt swith on it I think...

yes it does but usually a diffrence is seen in big power jumps like with an amplifier. the higher the power the higher the swr most of the time on a tuned antenna system just a slight difference is seen. AlthouGH Ive seen major differences in a troubled or bad setup.

well I am not running an amp on this setup it was just mentioned to prove a point of the wattage I had run through the SWR unit.
